The new 10-year deal between Penn State University Athletics and Oak View Group strengthens two trends: college athletic depts outsourcing sports venue F&B to generate a better experience and more revenue ((Penn St booked $10.6M in athletics gameday revenue (including F&B) in FY23)), and OVG pursuing these college tie-ups with great vigor. The City of Calgary and Calgary Sports & Entertainment Corp. have broken ground on the new Calgary arena 🏒 This C$800M venue, set to open in fall 2027, will be the new home for the Flames, covering 10 acres in downtown Calgary. The city is funding nearly C$375M, about 56% of the cost. The arena will feature a community ice rink, plazas, restaurants, the Flames team store, and open lots for future development. HOK’s design incorporates elements of fire, ice, land, and air inspired by the region’s indigenous people. At night, the arena will resemble a home fire, symbolizing warmth and community. I had a (video) chat with Comcast Spectacor CEO Dan Hilferty during his recent visit to Sports Business Journal's office about a handful of topics, including the recent Wells Fargo Center renovation, the company's plans for mixed-use development in the South Philly Sports Complex (with, so far, the Philadelphia Phillies) and about navigating the relationship with the Philadelphia 76ers, who have made clear they plan to leave the WFC at the end of the 2031 NBA season for their own venue. In this week's Sports Business Journal, I've got an interesting look at Espai Barca, the 1.45-billion-euro project that includes renovation of FC Barcelona's famed Spotify Camp Nou stadium and the surrounding district, ahead of FCB's visit to the U.S. for friendly matches, a trip that every year has increasingly important commercial goals. Espai Barca has an unmissable American sports business influence -- including the involvement of Innovative Partnerships Group, Legends, and Goldman Sachs -- and it comes at a crucial time for the 100% fan-owned club as it tries to move away from financial troubles surfaced by COVID amid an era when European football is increasingly dominated by state-owned clubs. Speaking to me about the Espai Barca business plan and its North American influence, Manel del Rio said, “The way you look at the business is a completely different story, and clubs that are moving toward that direction are going to be in a better competitive position.” Here is the story: https://lnkd.in/eewtqiJ6 CC Stacy Sonnenberg Chus Bueno Sergi Ricart i Balcells
