  • Today marks the start of a new era for the San Diego Police Department. We are honored to announce that Chief Scott Wahl has been sworn in as our 36th Chief of Police. In a touching ceremony, Chief Wahl's son removed his "Assistant Chief" badge, symbolizing the end of one chapter, while his wife pinned on his new "Chief" badge, marking the beginning of another. Mayor Todd Gloria administered the oath of office, a promise Chief Wahl first made as a young recruit and now renewed with the same dedication and commitment. Please join us in congratulating Chief Wahl as he steps into this new role, leading our department with integrity and honor.

  • Today marks the end of an era as we bid farewell to Chief of Police David Nisleit, who retires after 36 years of exemplary service. Chief Nisleit joined the San Diego Police Department on February 11, 1988. Throughout his career, he served in Central, Northern, and Mid-City patrol, Narcotics Team 10, Sex Crimes, Internal Affairs, Gangs, Special Events, and holding roles within SWAT from Operator to Sniper, Sergeant, and Commander. As our 35th Chief of Police, sworn in on March 2, 2018, Chief Nisleit led with vision and dedication. He established new divisions and teams to tackle emerging issues, prioritized recruitment, modernized our department through technology, and focused on officer wellness. He navigated some of the most challenging times in law enforcement, advocating for both the profession and our officers. His leadership extended beyond our city as a mentor to fellow chiefs nationwide, serving on the boards of CalChiefs and the Major Cities Chiefs Association. Chief Nisleit proudly continued the legacy of his father, Captain Randy Nisleit, and now, his son and son-in-law carry the torch for a third generation of service for the San Diego Police Department. Chief David Nisleit, thank you for your unwavering commitment and leadership. We wish you a joyful retirement with your loved ones. #ThankYouChiefNisleit #SDPD #EndOfAnEra #Leadership #ServiceOverSelf #Retirement

  • Today, San Diego hosted the 16th Annual Harvey Milk Diversity Breakfast in Mission Valley, celebrating diversity, inclusion, and the ongoing fight for equality. This year, the Chula Vista Police Department was honored to present a new award, the "Assistant Police Chief Phil Collum LGBTQA Leadership Award," in memory of the late Chula Vista Police Assistant Chief Phil Collum.   Assistant Chief Phil Collum was a trailblazer, being the first openly gay officer at the Chula Vista Police Department. His career was marked by significant contributions to both law enforcement and the LGBTQA community. Tragically, he passed away in April 2024 after battling a rare cancer. His legacy of service, courage, and advocacy continues to inspire and guide us.   The inaugural "Assistant Police Chief Phil Collum LGBTQA Leadership Award" was presented to four outstanding law enforcement officers for their exemplary leadership and commitment to the LGBTQA community. Chula Vista Police Chief Roxana Kennedy and Assistant Chief Collum's husband, William Lopez, had the honor of presenting the awards to:   San Diego Police Lieutenant Daniel Meyer San Diego Police Officer Akilah Coston San Diego County Sheriff's Department Lieutenant Michael Gonzales FBI Supervisory Special Agent Brett Kalina We are proud of their contributions and the positive impact they have made within our communities. Their dedication embodies the spirit of Phil Collum and reflects our shared commitment to equality, inclusion, and justice.   Harvey Milk, a pioneering figure in the fight for LGBTQ+ rights, was the first openly gay elected official in California. Milk also has a unique connection to San Diego, having served in the U.S. Navy as a diving officer based here before becoming a prominent political leader and activist. His legacy of courage, visibility, and advocacy continues to inspire generations.   We continue supporting and advocating for the values that Phil Collum and Harvey Milk championed. This award stands as a testament to their legacies and our ongoing efforts to promote leadership and inclusivity within law enforcement.
