Started my career in public safety as a 911 calltaker. So rewarding.
When someone calls 9-1-1, they are most often in a highly stressful situation or may be in despair. “You want to have empathy towards the person while, at the same time, get as much information as you can for officer safety,” says Cassidy. “But, honestly, having a calm voice is the most important thing for the caller and for the police officer.” Police dispatchers are trained in how to talk people through some very tense and fear‐stricken moments. The national average of staffing officers is 2.4 officers per 1000 residents; Minneapolis is currently staffed at 1.4 officers per 1000 residents. Only Portland, Ore. is lower in the rankings, with 1.3 officers per 1000 residents. As good of a job as the current MPD Chief is doing there, he needs to fix this ASAP. Suggestions: Some precincts are so low in staffing their desks that they now have locked doors to the public, with signs instructing them to call 911. Those desk positions should be filled by civilians, overseen by a front line supervisor. I would put together a job description, post hiring notices and (for those who can pass the background checks), train them immediately. It would be a great job for seniors or retired officers. In fact, I would replace all desk personnel in every precinct with civilians, with a front line supervisor overseeing the management of the desk crews. You could even bring back retired officers and make them supervisors over the civilian desk crews.

Public Safety. This is not acceptable. In the last 14 years, population is up over 15%, police officers down 10%. No wonder we have a crisis. City hall needs to reallocate resources to more police resources, with less funding on renaming things, etc. Leadership needs to set priorities - and public safety has to be job #1.

Premier Service Consultant at AT&T, Libertarian Thinker, Advocate for Stoic Business Leadership & Neo-Platonist Philosophy. "Passionate about Customer Service and Philosophy!" I share quotes that have meaning.
Stoic principles and being a police telecommunicator can help maintain composure, make rational decisions, and provide effective assistance to both the public and emergency responders by integrating these Stoic principles into their mindset and actions, we serve as a steadfast point of calm and clarity, both for those in need and for the emergency responders who rely on their support. 1. Perception: Understanding that it’s not events that disturb people, but their judgments about them. A telecommunicator must interpret situations objectively, without letting personal biases affect their judgment. Example: When receiving a call that seems chaotic, the telecommunicator uses their training to perceive the facts without panic. They understand that their role is to bring order to the situation, not to be swept away by the caller’s distress. 2. Action: Focusing on what is within one’s power. A telecommunicator can’t control the emergencies that occur, but they can control their response and the help they provide. Example: Knowing they can’t control the outcome of an incident, the telecommunicator focuses on what they can do: provide clear instructions, dispatch the appropriate services, and offer calm reassurance to the caller. 3. Will: Embracing what happens as a natural part of the world’s order. A telecommunicator should accept the things they cannot change and work with dedication on what they can influence. Example: When faced with a particularly tragic event, the telecommunicator accepts the reality of the situation and wills themselves to continue working effectively, understanding that their role is crucial in the broader context of community service. 4. Nature: Living in harmony with one’s own nature. For a telecommunicator, this means recognizing their role in the larger system of emergency response and acting in accordance with the values of service and protection. example: Embracing their nature as a facilitator of aid, the telecommunicator works in harmony with police officers, firefighters, and paramedics, ensuring that information flows smoothly and efficiently to where it’s needed most. 5. Reason: Using rational thinking to navigate through life’s challenges. A telecommunicator must remain clear-headed and analytical, even when faced with high-stress situations. example: In the midst of a high-pressure scenario, the telecommunicator uses reason to prioritize calls, manage resources, and make split-second decisions that could have significant consequences. #Stoicism #Stoic #FirstResponder #Police #Telecommunicator

Public Safety. As Council debates budget minutiae, is this not the prime issue? Bike lanes, Bus lanes, renaming squares, toboganning bans, etc all have their own special interest voices, but public safety has to be JOB ONE! Lets tell council to reallocate funds to our police and other public safety measures. Then lets urge Ottawa to amend the current “catch and release” approach to offenders. Lets act.

Imagine a world where all police are volunteers... that's search and rescue in BC. But should it become a paid position? --- All ground search and rescue in BC is volunteer (with the exclusion of a few teams that operate in national parks) and there is no charge for SAR I can't help but find that insane. One of, if not the, most versatile emergency response type is virtually exclusively volunteer Imagine EMS, the police or fire department being volunteer. SAR gets nowhere near as many calls as the rest of emergency response but I would argue it's no less urgent to find a child lost in the woods in freezing weather, than it is to extract someone from a burning building or hostage situation --- BC's emergency response teams consist of: - 25,000 career fire fighters (according to JIBC) - 4,000 BCEHS members (including operations support, according to BCEHS) - 10,000 police officers (according to JIBC) - 60,000 hospital staff (according to the Hospital Employees Union) - Totaling 99,000 people Let alone support rolls and other positions not mentioned above such as: - Correctional officers - Sheriffs - Police civilian members - Police and fire call-takers - Paid-call fire fighters - All of emergency management - And so much more So although SAR only accounts for about 3% of emergency response staff, it's about the same size as BCEHS. And yet is predominantly responsible for wilderness, urban, aerial and marine areas. Hence why I say SAR is probably the most versatile emergency response type SAR can be supported by other emergency response, but certainly not replaced; it is a vital roll. So... --- Should it become a paid position? I would say yes, with a pay structure similar to that of a paid-call fire fighter where members are paid for their time during a response. However, I also think support staff (logistics, training, maintenance, etc.) should also be paid --- Thoughts? (Yes, even the people pictured in this event below are volunteers) #searchandrescue #emergency #emergencyresponse #emergencymanagement
