Introducing The 1901 Project, an ambitious and energizing community-first mixed-use development designed by RIOS in collaboration with the United Center Joint Venture group. Encompassing over 13 million sq. ft., the future vision for the United Center—home to the Chicago Bulls and Chicago Blackhawks—will reconnect surrounding neighborhoods and create a world-class urban core for Chicago’s West Side. The 1901 Project is part of the United Center owners’ $7 billion transformative investment, representing a visionary approach to urban planning set to become a model for metropolises worldwide. Phase I of The 1901 Project will feature an elevated public park with more than 10 acres of public space, a world-class 6,000-seat Music Hall venue, reimagined parking facilities, improved pedestrian experiences, and hotel and retail spaces—activating the neighborhood as a year-round destination to live, work, and play. RIOS recently attended the ULI Asia Pacific Summit in Tokyo, which was heavily focused on sustainability, with topics ranging from recycling and recapturing interior materials to resiliency with natural disasters like flooding, storms, and earthquakes. Thomas Heatherwick offered the opening keynote, setting the tone for conversations on humanizing cities through thoughtful placemaking and designing more unique building fabrics, like the Azabudai Hills district. Our team, Co-CEO and Partner, Jessamyn Davis, Studio Director Taek Kim, Architecture Director Claudia Melniciuc, AIA Melniciuc and Project Designer Ruen Qing Wong, attended study tours at some of the most innovative Tokyo projects that are influencing the global conversation on architecture and placemaking. At Miyashita Park, we witnessed firsthand how the intentional placemaking of a third space in the middle of a bustling urban district like Shibuya can offer respite and accessibility. Moderated by Fiona Jiyoung Bae, the talk was centered on RIOS' pursuit of wonder and focused the tenets that redefine placemaking as an immersive experience to unlock the untapped potential of Korea's cities and urban landscapes. The conversation engaged with local and international developers to explore how the built environment can revitalize urban areas, enhance community engagement, and influence social interactions and cultural experiences. For the Museum of History and the Future in Turku, Finland, RIOS aimed to redefine the museum typology, making it a critical part of the social fabric and a hub for wonder and discovery. RIOS' vision for the Museum of History and the Future focuses on linking the region's dualities—connecting land and sea, history and modernity, and enhancing the connection to landmarks and community spaces. The sustainable design provides a flexible framework with layered experiences, supporting various activities and programming.
