For the Museum of History and the Future in Turku, Finland, RIOS aimed to redefine the museum typology, making it a critical part of the social fabric and a hub for wonder and discovery. RIOS' vision for the Museum of History and the Future focuses on linking the region's dualities—connecting land and sea, history and modernity, and enhancing the connection to landmarks and community spaces. The sustainable design provides a flexible framework with layered experiences, supporting various activities and programming. It elevates the traditional role of a museum by responding to the local context, culture, and site conditions while celebrating Turku's past and future vision for the city. Today is International Museum Day! The objective of this day is to raise awareness that museums are an important means of cultural exchange and enrichment, as well as development of mutual understanding, cooperation, and peace. International Museum Day fosters global connections through shared celebrations. Museums around the world are hosting events, free admissions, workshops, and interactive tours to engage the public--designed to draw in diverse audiences and offer them insights into cultures other than their own. At Marx|Okubo we understand the value that art, creative, and event spaces bring to all communities—and to the built environment. And it is a privilege for us to work with some of the most renowned museums. During each project, we continue to ask one key question: How can we help these meaningful community spaces thrive for generations to come? Assessing and solving for historic or public atmospheres that may house fragile collections or thousands of people means understanding and addressing both form and function. Today we celebrate these special places and the opportunities to help our arts, culture, and entertainment clients preserve and promote these vital, sensitive, and crucial spaces. https://lnkd.in/gXD9WP5F #internationalmuseumday #marxokubo #museums #aecconsultants #realestate #architecture #construction

I’m at the Mecca of Museums — NGMA, National Museum. I want to drown in this building’s architecture and find delight before it moves to a new building in 2025. An early morning meeting that I made even earlier to drown in Amrita Shergil’s Bride’s Toilet, Raja Ravi Verma or Jamini Roy. I recently read somewhere, “The museum must not become an ordinary place. It must offer wondrous experiences; it must provide insights into the mysteries of creation; it must invite us to embark on new journeys.” Museology or study of museums is fascinating, especially when you are doing research in NGMA. Will the mummies in National Gallery make mummy out of the museum. The future of museums is in pursuit of new audiences. The museum cannot stand to be isolated anymore, it has to be more integrated and inclusive. A space where our becoming and belonging is both defined. Ai will help you personalise your visit to museums in the future. Future of museums will really have to struggle between surviving as public spaces and the commerce involved. What will save most museums is new imaginations and approaches. It’s upto us to keep the magic in museums alive. They weren’t dead dusty places, but spaces of cultural richness and wonder. A continued effort to find delight in these spots and revive them will help them remain relevant. What’s the role of NGMA in 2024? “It’s to connect with every generation.” #museums #nationalmuseum #ngma #inspiration #stories #art #culture

Non Plus Ultra is rooted at the intersection of architecture and civic identity, and nowhere is that expression grander than at world fairs/expos. World's fair structures sometimes become a permanent part of a host city's cultural and physical landscape. These structures are a living memory of the fair and a snapshot of the attitudes, perceptions, and hopes of the people who made them. For example, many mid-20th-century structures have outer-space themes, showing people's aspirations concerning space exploration. Other buildings are experiments to address housing problems, reflecting concerns and issues of the time. Still others are timeless and make grand pronouncements about the future of humanity. Here's a look at some of the famous world's fair structures that still exist today. (We are a little befuddled that our Palace Of Fine Arts, originally constructed for the 1915 Panama–Pacific International Exposition to exhibit works of art, missed this list!) https://lnkd.in/gRx5JHjd

Archaeology, Collections, History, Heritage, Curation, Interpretation and Sustainable Tourism Development
Successful #interpretation is based on themes. But what is a theme and why is it important? Fáilte Ireland refers to themes as "the big idea". Expert interpreter, James Carter, says "it organises your interpretation, and expresses the idea you want people to take away with them". Both are correct. But we know it also has another purpose. A theme guides interpretation planning as the exhibition grows and takes shape. It's easy to get distracted with new ideas throughout the creative process. Themes are an anchor of your original idea so you never loose sight of your objectives. Otherwise its mayhem! EXHIBITION | Macao International Art Biennale 2023 As part of this year’s Macao Biennale, Tim Stonor has been commissioned to create three short films on the theme of ‘The city as a cathedral of corporeal encounter’: ‘Habitat. Artery. Place‘ assembles the networks of built and natural space that define London: above, below and at ground level. ‘Backstreets to boulevards’ takes a journey through the spatial hierarchy of London’s streets, from local lanes to major arteries. ‘City of villages’ maps London’s walkability, using an algorithm that links everyday destinations to reveal a web of hyper-local centres. Opening to the public today, the films are being shown in the London Pavilion of the Biennale, curated by Roger W. and organised by the British Consulate General in Hong Kong and the Secretariat for Social Affairs and Culture of the Government of the Macao Special Administrative Region. Speaking about the works, Tim said: “This commission presents three map-based animations of London that explore the interconnectivity of its urban systems: those networks that create opportunities for human encounter and everything that then flows from those (mostly gentle) collisions. The overlap between art and science is a common ground we’ve enjoyed since the beginnings of space syntax in the 1980s: the play of light, sequencing of information and serendipity of outcomes matter as much to research-based practitioners as they do to the makers and observers of art.” #mapping #exhibition #spatialnetwork #urbanmodel #cities #walkability #spacesyntax #art #science https://lnkd.in/eQvVb3ju

🏛️ Heritage museum reconstruction project requirements are full of contradictions! 🔳 🔲 ⚫️ Design an appealing space - new space, new horizons ⚪️ Design a neutral space - the exhibit takes center stage ⚫️ Intervening - conteporary exhibitions demand contemporary spaces ⚪️ Not intervening - the curent structure are under strict protection! ⚫️ Expanding capacities for museum exhibits and storage ⚪️ Staying within the size limits - expansion is not possible due to heritage protection Finiding a solution means playing for "both teams". In the case of the project we are currently working on, the "circulation scheme" was one of many spacial studies that confirmed the plan is "working." ⬆➡⬇⬅ What challenges should we be prepared for? #MuseumReconstruction #DesignDilemmas #InnovativeSolutions

Conference paper Cities, Cultural Resilience and Place-based Heritage-The Museum’s Role-Defining Consideration Toward Urban Coherence The consideration approach for an overall impact for urban coherence, cultural facilitates such as museum requires a rigorous and comprehensive exploration and deliberation for of practice toward resilience and sustainability in the urban centers. In considering for a meaningful urban coherence and cultural fortification, the incorporation of ‘role-defining’ elements as available redefinition of pioneering role-marking to cultural facilities in urban center are assessed, hence the purpose of this study. The theoretical frameworks, including the adaptive practice and thinking may be helpful when considering place-based heritage for cultural facilities. We suggest that a collaborative thinking through the practical implementation could aid the role-defining impact of museums in the urban context. Given this, the analysis revealed that consideration to cultural amenities may be categorized as those: (1) the enhancement with cultural amenities in urban setting, whether in the interior or exterior environment, can aid in the regenerative role toward the restoration of the urban ecological landscape; (2) the museum’s role positioning should consider the nature, heritage and assets available to benefit the cultural; (3) ideas and practices pertaining to the systemic design consideration requires the socio-cultural, economic and regenerative dimensional; (4) the focuses is placed on the available strategies that include thinking toward an urban coherence. Together, they contribute to the consideration for museum planning and role definition befitting to the cultural resilience for the future of urbanity. #Conferencepaper #Culture #Museum
