This week, I'm excited to highlight Chapter 3: Impact stories. We profile success stories from five of our nonprofit partner organizations: 1️⃣ Advancing clean water access with charity: water With support from Cisco’s Global Impact Grant program, charity: water developed and deployed a first-of-its-kind IoT-based sensor that remotely monitors water usage and the health of hand pumps. These sensors, designed for remote, low-resource environments, have a battery life of 10 years or more and do not require specialized tools for installation. 2️⃣ Supporting life-saving entrepreneurs with Living Goods Living Goods saves lives at scale by providing digitally enabled tools, data, and resources to community health workers. In rural Kenya, Rosaline, a community health worker supported by Cisco and Living Goods, received a smartphone to track patients, diagnose illnesses, and provide education. She also receives a reliable medication supply to treat common diseases. 3️⃣ Improving access to digital financial services with Opportunity International Cisco partnered with Opportunity International to launch digital banking solutions, including iris and fingerprint scans, and voice-recorded training, promoting financial inclusion among under-banked populations. Devina Konadu from Ghana used these services to start her own business, accessing banking services conveniently and securely from her phone. 4️⃣ Fostering access to math and education with MIND Education Leveraging Cisco products, software, and financial investments, MIND and Cisco created innovative math curricula featuring translation, localization, content management solutions, learning game development, and platform tools. These efforts supported organizational scalability, drove growth within school districts, and ensured financial sustainability 5️⃣ Empowering new careers with Cisco Networking Academy Ernest Wambari, a graduate of Cisco Networking Academy, became the first Kenyan to achieve Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert (CCIE) status. Today, he plays a crucial role in the U.N.’s World Food Programme, using his skills to modernize operations and support millions facing food insecurities. 🌟 These stories illustrate the transformative power of partnerships and innovation in creating meaningful change. In 2024, climate change has emerged as a leading cause of displacement globally. With over 117 million people forcibly displaced from their homes, the financial inclusion sector has a critical role to play in preventing, minimizing, and addressing climate-induced displacement. At Opportunity International, we are actively developing sustainable solutions across all these areas. This #RefugeeWeek, hear from Opportunity's Deborah Foy in the European Microfinance Platform (e-MFP), where she shares a playbook for Microfinance Institutions (MFIs) to both prevent climate-related displacement and support forcibly displaced populations in rebuilding their lives. #ClimateChange #FinancialInclusion #WorldRefugeeDay https://lnkd.in/gRgnkjes

“In the past we could wait for days for agriculture extension workers to come and address whatever problems we had on our farms. That is no longer the case. Just a touch of a button we have all the information we need.” - Smallholder Farmer Maron Galeta. The future is already here, it’s just not evenly distributed - but Opportunity's newest digital innovations are closing that digital divide and connecting smallholder farmers to the transformative impacts of generative AI. Our own Greg Nelson and Timothy Strong share more on #inclusive AI in this new article from Bloomberg News. Thanks to Frank Jomo and Antony Sguazzin for covering this story. #ai #genai #smallholderfarmer #digitalinclusion #climateadaptation https://lnkd.in/g7hvxdZD

Congratulations to Opportunity International Savings and Loans Ltd for 20 years of service in #Ghana! As one of the country’s first financial institutions dedicated to providing financial and non-financial services to underserved communities, the celebration marks over GHS 3 Billion in total loans disbursed and over 668,000 people reached over the 2 decades. Last week, a delegation of representatives from across the Opportunity International global network visited some of the incredible projects lead by OISL - building capacity for smallholder farmers, training new skills for street porters, and investing in local schools. For us, financing doesn't stop with a loan - and our partners in Ghana are dedicated to ensuring financial inclusion and financial health for all Ghanaians. We’re proud to have supported the institution since the very beginning, and look forward to creating even greater impact in the future! #financialinclusion #impact #economicdevelopment #collaboration
