Meet Ivania, an inspiring small business owner from central Nicaragua! Before starting her business, Ivania worked abroad cleaning houses. While this job provided for her family, it kept her away from her loved ones. Wanting to be closer to her son and father, Ivania decided to start a small food business at home. With a small loan of $450, Ivania launched her venture selling delicious Nicaraguan street food and tortillas to her neighbours. Over the years, thanks to training and support, her business flourished. Today, her menu boasts a variety of traditional dishes, and she supplies several local restaurants with her sought-after tortillas. Ivania's business not only allowed her to care for her father during his last days but also supported her son through his battle with cancer. Thankfully, her son overcame cancer, and together, they embarked on a new venture—a tire repair shop near their home. With determination and resilience, Ivania has broken the cycle of poverty, providing a better future for her son and inspiring her community. Her story is a testament to the power of opportunity. During World Refugee Week, let's remember that the journey many take in search of a better life often begins at home. Throughout Latin America, countless individuals embark on dangerous journeys due to the lack of work opportunities and poor socioeconomic and security conditions. These brave people from countries such as Honduras, Nicaragua, Colombia, and beyond seek to provide for their families, either by working abroad and sending money back or by relocating their loved ones. At Opportunity International Canada, we are committed to addressing these root causes. Our work in Honduras, Nicaragua, and Colombia, in partnership with local organizations, creates opportunities that help people build sustainable livelihoods at home, reducing the need to seek refuge elsewhere.
