Cool off with this exciting update on results from SOS, the 2022-2023 field campaign studying the sublimation of snow: ❄️ Scientists found that most water loss to sublimation occurs after the release of April 1 runoff forecasts, critical for water management decisions. ❄️ Most of mid-winter’s sublimation occurs during blowing snow conditions, but much of it is redistributed and not lost to sublimation. ❄️ Based on the data, scientists were able to produce the most comprehensive examination to date on mountain snow sublimation, filling in longstanding gaps in knowledge. Thrilled to introduce the newest addition to our NSF NCAR EOL ground-based instrumentation portfolio:  the Atmospheric Sounder Spectrometer for IR Spectral Technology (ASSIST-II). This month, we have deployed the ASSIST-II alongside instrumentation provided by our collaborators at the University of Albany, SUNY, to study atmospheric responses to the Total Solar Eclipse. Still soaring on cloud 9 from an enlightening eclipse excursion! Last Monday, NSF NCAR pilots flew the NSF/NCAR Gulfstream V on the path of totality during the total solar eclipse, allowing scientists to get an above-the-clouds view of the eclipse for the ACES campaign. Using the ACES instrument, scientists from the Center for Astrophysics | Harvard & Smithsonian worked to chart infrared coronal emissions.  • Congratulations on a successful flight to the fantastic ACES team; even our smallest fan (pictured) was cheering you on! Who's the star of the eclipse? The Sun's corona, that crown-like outermost part of the Sun’s atmosphere. 👑 Difficult to study while the Sun is shining bright, Smithsonian scientist Jenna Samra is getting the best look by taking to the sky. Aboard an National Science Foundation (NSF) Gulfstream V operated by NSF NCAR - The National Center for Atmospheric Research, Samra and her team will use an instrument they built to measure the infrared light emitted by the corona. Their measurements will be used to design future instruments to measure the coronal magnetic field, which powers "space weather" events that can affect the electronics on spacecraft, impact human health in space, and damage and disrupt electrical circuits on Earth. During the 2017 eclipse, Samra and team cheered during totality—the moment when the Sun completely disappeared behind the Moon—when they could finally capture the data they spent years planning to collect. With an even more advanced instrument, Samra will bring back valuable data to our Center for Astrophysics | Harvard & Smithsonian. Photos: 1.
