Two experimental tools that will speed fire detection and warning got a week-long test run in NOAA’s new Fire Weather Testbed in June during a series of hands-on simulations with National Weather Service fire weather forecasters, state wildfire managers, researchers, and social scientists. The first, NOAA’s Next Generation Fire System, uses artificial intelligence to spot fires quickly via satellite, speeding up responses. The second tool enhances information exchange between meteorologists, land managers, and fire agencies to issue warnings sooner. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/gmjVR-ak

Heading to the movies this weekend? If you’re planning on seeing the new 🌪️#TwistersMovie 🌪️, keep an eye out for NOAA! (Yes, we make some cameo appearances!) And check out our new page, noaa.gov/twisters to find out: What’s it like to be an actual storm chaser? Can a tornado really catch fire? Are twin tornadoes possible? Is it possible to “tame a tornado”? Who actually studies these storms? (We’ll give you a hint for that last one… we do!) Pictured: Characters from the movie Twisters marvel at the awesome power of violent tornadoes as they strike across Oklahoma in a promotional poster for the movie. Immensely proud of today’s announced Cooperative Research and Development Agreement between NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration & United Airlines to equip an ✈️ with tech to measure greenhouse gases and other pollutants during domestic flights. "This collaboration represents a significant leap forward in U.S. efforts to monitor and mitigate greenhouse gas emissions," said Sarah Kapnick, Ph.D., NOAA’s chief scientist. “We’ll be collecting data over multiple cities multiple times a day, in different seasons, and under varying weather conditions,” said Colm Sweeney, who leads GML’s commercial aircraft program. Combining vertical greenhouse gas and weather profiles from instruments on commercial aircraft with satellite observations would create a continuous monitoring system in the United States. Tracking ocean carbon dioxide is critical to the billion people who get 15% or more of their annual protein from the sea. The ocean acts as a “carbon sink.” When CO2 is absorbed by seawater, a series of chemical reactions occur causing the seawater to become more acidic, causing shells to be vulnerable to structural weakness. Over 38 million observations from 1957 to 2023 are available from NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information that help quantify the risk. Read more on the latest version of the Surface Ocean Carbon Atlas database, known as SOCATv2024: https://lnkd.in/eK_wftVz #CarbonDioxide #OceanAcidification #CO2 #CarbonSink #OceanHealth
