Because roads are back open and evacuation orders have been lifted for the #LakeShoreFire, the Mesa Lab and road will reopen tomorrow (Aug. 2) to staff and the public. Many thanks to firefighters and emergency responders that quickly and safely managed the #wildfire. #COFire

We 💙 research from our Innovator Program! Collaborating with NSF NCAR and UC San Diego scientists, Innovator Jessica Wan from Scripps Institution of Oceanography conducted an important study on geoengineering. The study is the first to demonstrate the potential diminishment and even reversal of benefits of a regional cloud brightening strategy as climate conditions change. The research was funded by the NSF NCAR Innovator Program, which partners NSF NCAR scientists with collaborators across social science and scientific lines. https://lnkd.in/gAvY7x_H • • • #research #geoengineering #clouds

NSF NCAR - The National Center for Atmospheric Research reposted this
NEA has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the United States National Science Foundation National Center for Atmospheric Research (NSF NCAR), to collaborate on the research and development of next-generation weather and climate modelling systems. Scientists from NSF NCAR - The National Center for Atmospheric Research and NEA’s Centre for Climate Research Singapore will embark on novel research for modelling and predicting the weather and climate of tropical urban environments like Singapore’s. Techniques such as artificial intelligence will also be incorporated to develop advanced weather and climate services. This partnership will strengthen our weather and climate science capabilities, enabling NEA to provide better weather and climate services to Singapore and the region. The MOU with NSF NCAR complements other existing research collaborations between NEA and various world-class institutions in weather and climate science. NEA currently has an ongoing MOU with the UK Met Office, and a Strategic Relationship Arrangement with Australia’s Bureau of Meteorology – both focused on improving various aspects of weather and climate research, modelling and prediction. #weatherservices #climateservices #climatescience #weatherscience
CCRS is delighted to announce a new strategic partnership with the U.S. National Science Foundation National Center for Atmospheric Research (NSF NCAR), based in Boulder, Colorado. Under the new partnership, CCRS and NSF NCAR scientists will undertake joint R&D in tropical weather/climate science, and the development and application of a next-generation (‘SINGV_NG’) weather/climate modelling system optimised for tropical and urban environments. NSF NCAR is a world-leading atmospheric science research centre managed by UCAR - The University Corporation for Atmospheric Research, providing both scientific expertise and “enablers” (models, observations, supercomputing, testbeds, tutorials, etc.) to support a large range of national and international weather/climate research activities. Through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) recently signed between the National Environment Agency and NSF NCAR, joint R&D efforts between CCRS and NSF NCAR will initially focus on exploring the use of NSF NCAR's Model for Prediction Across Scales (MPAS) at km-scale resolution in the deep tropics. The initial ‘SINGV_NG(MPAS)’ project includes the following goals: 🌏 Accelerated R&D of key data assimilation capabilities suitable for the deep tropics, such as the use of cloud-affected “all-sky” hyperspectral satellite radiance observations, leveraging capabilities developed by UCAR’s Joint Center for Satellite Data Assimilation (JCSDA) 🌏 A novel, stretched-grid application of MPAS for Southeast Asia (SEA) suitable for fine-scale (100–300m) weather prediction in the Singapore region 🌏 Enhanced understanding of physical processes that are crucial for tropical weather prediction and climate projection Beyond the initial project, common areas of R&D interest include the use of artificial intelligence within tropical weather/climate applications, aviation weather impacts, regional climate projections, and the development and evaluation of a high-resolution regional coupled ocean-atmosphere modelling system, leveraging CCRS’ expertise in coupled and urban modelling. This milestone builds on CCRS' existing international multilateral collaborations as a core member of the Momentum Partnership, and bilateral partnerships with the UK Met Office and the Australian Bureau of Meteorology. The MOU with NSF NCAR further strengthens CCRS’ commitment to global partnerships to advance weather and climate modelling R&D in the SEA region. We look forward to the exciting possibilities brought by this MOU and its potential impact on enhancing CCRS’ weather and climate capabilities to meet stakeholder needs. Follow this page to keep abreast of CCRS’ R&D updates! Have you noticed our ozone garden at the Mesa Lab? It’s both beautiful and beneficial for scientists, BEElieve it or not! 🐝 The garden hosts an array of bioindicators, or plants that are sensitive to ground-level ozone. Scientists use this garden as a way to understand the air quality in the Denver area over the past growing and blooming season. Next time you visit the Mesa Lab, check out our ozone garden and the informative posters curated by UCAR - The University Corporation for Atmospheric Research/ UCAR Center for Science Education. 🐝 Learn more about our ozone garden: https://lnkd.in/gMSJJnNg • • • #ozone #airquality #bioindicators #garden

Will hurricanes get more intense in a warmer climate? Scientists are looking into how moisture in the atmosphere might affect the growth of hurricane “seeds.” Increased atmospheric moisture may alter critical weather patterns over Africa, making it more difficult for the predecessors of many Atlantic hurricanes to form, according to a new study led by NSF NCAR scientist Kelly Nunez Ocasio, PhD. In 1984, NSF NCAR supported the Los Angeles Olympic games with weather forecasting towers! #ThrowbackThursday 🏊🏼♀️ To support the National Weather Service Forecast Office, we deployed eight solar-powered Portable Automated Mesonet (PAM II) weather stations to give up-to-the-minute weather updates. This was integral to ensure events like cycling, equestrian events, and swimming and diving (among others) were not interrupted by weather events. 🏃♀️ Learn more from the NSF NCAR Archives and explore this #Olympics artifact: https://lnkd.in/gZC5FRMQ • • • #weather #wx #tbt
