“So, what do you do?” It’s a question we all get asked, but for Meridianites it’s a question without an easy answer. Every project at Meridian is unique, and while we believe there’s strength in our unique approach to the work, it also makes it hard to sum up what we do in an elevator pitch (especially if that elevator is only going a couple of floors!). We often say, “We are a mission-driven, nonprofit consultancy,” but what does that mean? To us, it means we’re committed to helping our partners improve lives, the environment, and the economy. For over 25 years, individuals, businesses, government entities, NGOs, and more have relied on us to help them tackle complex environmental and social issues. We bring a fresh approach to our partnerships—whether we’re providing strategic advice, incubating a new organization, facilitating contentious dialogue, or designing a multi-year collaborative. We co-create spaces where participants feel heard and invested in finding solutions and crafting a shared vision. We want there to be enough buy-in on that final vision that the people at the tables we’re facilitating feel empowered and motivated to execute that vision in the real world. Alternative Dispute Resolution
Meridian builds understanding, guides collaboration, and drives action to address our world’s complex challenges
About us
Meridian is a mission-driven, nonprofit consultancy that has helped our clients and partners develop and implement solutions to complicated, often controversial problems—big and small, global and local—for over two decades. We do this with an innovative approach that brings together three elements: our deep understanding of the issues at hand, as well as the people, politics, and power dynamics that surround them; our dedicated, expert team; and our ability to foster constructive discussions, manage decisions, and support actions that shape the world for the better. We work not only to shape meaningful consensus and action in the near term, but also to build our partners’ capacity for cooperation that often continues for years, even decades. We focus on five key services: collaboration, implementation, strategy, research, and philanthropic support. We bring our skills to bear on a diverse range of issues, including environment & natural resources, climate change, agriculture & food systems, forests, health, oceans & coasts, resilience, science & technology, and water. Across issues, boundaries, and systems, our work is a catalyst for powerful impact.

“It is the long history of humankind (and animal kind, too) that those who learned to collaborate and improvise most effectively have prevailed.” - Charles Darwin Last week, over 50 leaders from 18 partner organizations came together for our annual 1000L co-design workshop with the auspicious goal of charting a path forward for a new season of action. Over four days, participants worked tirelessly to tackle big questions, explore new opportunities, and create ambitious pathways for bringing integrative, collaborative land management approaches to landscape partnerships worldwide. This work, by its nature, requires deep collaboration and improvisation. It's an honor to have so many partners walking and working alongside us. Stay tuned for much more on the outcomes of this exciting event! A special thanks to everyone from Bounce Beyond, CDP, CGIAR, Living Landscapes, IUCN, Tech Matters, UNDP, The Nature Conservancy, Rainforest Alliance, Red Latinoamericana de Bosques Modelo, Commonland, World Resources Institute, Heifer International, Regen10, Meridian Institute, EcoAgriculture Partners, and Climate-KIC who joined us for this year's workshop!

It was wonderful to have you there, Wendy Millet! Thank you for sharing your thoughts (and photos!).
Thank you to Meridian Institute, Doris Duke Foundation, McKnight Foundation, The Builder's Foundation for convening The Systems-Based Investing Field Lab. It was a great couple of days at Duke Farms meeting investors, philanthropists, systems change experts, and food and agricultural leaders, touring local farms and discussing challenges farmers face and ways capital can transform the food systems.

I can’t believe it’s already been more than two weeks since the Center for Sustainable Finance and Private Wealth’s (CSP) inaugural training program for wealth owners. The “Investing for Systems Change” event brought together 20 investors from around the world for three days of learning, connecting, and problem solving. Thank you to the team at Center for Sustainable Finance and Private Wealth for leading the charge and for including Meridian Institute as part of the instructional team, which also featured TransCap Initiative, TWIST: Investing for Systems Change, The ImPact, and MIT Sloan School of Management. Given our 25-year history supporting systems change processes and a growing interest in Systemic Investing, we recently rolled out our Systems-Based Investing Field Lab series. These three-day, place-based, issue-based experiences apply systemic investing theory to real-world systems challenges. The Field Labs take private wealth owners, philanthropists, and systemic investing thought leaders to meet and learn from the individuals and institutions working on the ground to drive systems change. Our inaugural Field Lab, which took place in May at @Duke Farms, focused on systemic investing approaches that can accelerate regenerative agricultural practices in peri-urban settings: https://lnkd.in/gmQsDFqP We have two more Field Labs on the horizon, with others in the works, including Labs in Mexico and East Africa, which will have a food systems focus. 🌽 October 2024: Minneapolis, MN, USA – Diversification of Row Crop Systems in the US Midwest 🌊 April 2025: Maine, USA – Aquaculture, Coastal Change, Blue Economy If you’d like to join us at a future Field Lab, please complete this form: https://bit.ly/3V9bS5G Falko Paetzold Erin Duddy Seth Fleisher Vicki Maler Ann Tan Rory Tews Jason Jay Dominic Hofstetter Samuel Bonsey Hanson Gong Alban Yau Britta Gruenig, Professional Certified Coach Nancy R.
Last week, we had the pleasure of hosting our inaugural Systems-Based Investing Field Lab at Duke Farms. This four-day convening united a diverse group of investors, philanthropists, systems change experts, and food and agriculture leaders from the Eastern Seaboard and beyond. The Field Lab was a highly collaborative, co-learning experience for individuals deploying capital to transform regional food and agricultural systems. Participants got into the field to engage with farmers, ranchers, and community leaders. We enjoyed visits to Duke Farms, Cotton Cattle Farms (Richard Cotton), Bobolink Dairy & Bakehouse, and Wildflower Farm (Tomia MacQueen). The Field Lab was sponsored by the Doris Duke Foundation, Builders Vision, and the McKnight Foundation, and convened by Meridian Institute. All photos are by MacKenna Lewis. "If we are not at the table, we are on the menu." Arnold Puech d'Alissac opens the World Farmers' Organisation General Assembly at the FAO HQ in Rome. "Family farmers are key to transforming food systems into equitable and just food systems" notes Esther Penunia from Asian Farmers' Association for Sustainable Rural Development (AFA), reminding us that we only have 5 more years in the UN Decade of Family Farming and much to be done to put the policies and and finance in place to support farmers implement climate resilient practices. Alejo Maggini and I are delighted to be here, representing the Just Rural Transition and Meridian Institute. These meetings are great opportunities to hear about the huge challenges faced by farmers around the world, their advocacy priorities, and the importance of consultative processes in the design of effective and context-appropriate policy responses.

Our latest #research #publication assesses the environmental, financial, and social #risks for three dimensions of #agricultural #systems and its risk bearers: On-Farm, Off-Farm, and Systemic. This report, "An Overview of Risk Mitigation in Agricultural Systems for Farms, Lenders, and Governments" was made in collaboration with Meridian Institute. After a comprehensive review of 450 articles and reports published between 2007-2023, plus in-depth interviews and focus groups with 14 farmers, advocates, and stakeholders, we're excited to share our insights. Throughout the month of June, we'll be breaking down key findings every week. ➡ To read the full report, visit: https://lnkd.in/gSb8ACi3 #agriculture #health #finance #government #private #public #investment #resilience Christi Electris, Anna Zara Aspenson, MPH, Jaime Silverstein, Sharlene Brown, A.L. Systems change consultant working with foundations and NGOs in their process of co-designing and executing their food systems strategy
When we think about systems transformation, two words come to mind immediately: complexity and urgency. I had the pleasure of supporting a systems-based investing convening with the incredible Meridian Institute team a couple of weeks back. While complexity and urgency were central in our discussions, so were the importance of building human relationships and getting out in the field to learn from the farms themselves! With the stunning grounds of Duke Farms in New Jersey as the background, we explored the question: "What are the opportunities and challenges of mobilizing financial and other forms of capital to advance food and agriculture systems transformation?" It's always fun to bring together an audacious group, especially when they are already envisioning and driving change at the intersection of food systems, systemic interventions, and capital. Our conversations were bold and inspiring, leading to practical insights and opportunities. ✨ Much more learning, unlearning, exploration, and coordination ahead to bring about systems-based investing! #SystemsTransformation #FoodSystems #Agriculture #InvestingInTheFuture #CapitalForChange
