About us

In 1944, Heifer International’s founder, Dan West, began outlining a simple but groundbreaking plan to tackle hunger around the world. West, a farmer from the Midwest and Church of the Brethren member, had recently returned from feeding weary refugees during volunteer service in the Spanish Civil War. He had seen firsthand that giving people food was a short-term solution, whereas providing them with animals offered a steady supply of nutritious food for an entire family. His philosophy still inspires Heifer’s work today. Partnering with farmers across a range of different livestock and crops, we create unique solutions to local challenges. Today, Heifer International has operations in 19 countries around the world, working alongside local farmers, business owners and their communities, as they mobilize and envision their futures. Together, we build inclusive, resilient economies, so communities can develop effective ways to end global hunger and poverty in a sustainable way. To date, we have supported more than 46 million farming families across Africa, Asia and the Americas and in the past five years alone, we have worked alongside 2.7 million families to close the living income gap or set them on a path to doing so. Between now and 2030, we will support an additional 10 million people to reach a living income by scaling up our signature programs. To achieve this, Heifer International relies on its passionate, committed and highly skilled staff.

On July 14, 1944, Dan West facilitated a shipment of 17 cattle from Alabama to Puerto Rico to improve the fortunes of impoverished communities there, and Heifer International was born. 80 years later, we have continued to evolve our ways of working, but we remain laser-focused on West’s fundamental goal: ending rural hunger and poverty. And because of supporters like you, we have helped more than 46 million families in 125 countries. Thank you for joining us in creating a better world. ❤️

Oscar Castañeda, Heifer’s SVP of Americas programs, spoke yesterday at the World Food Prize Foundation’s #DialogueNEXT event in Mexico, on a panel exploring sustainable agriculture through responsible sourcing.   He called on centering the voices of smallholder farmers, for the impact of cross-sector partnerships, and for empowering farming families — and the women who often head them — by making science accessible and applicable.    "For us, the future rests in the hands of the women with whom we work,” Oscar said. “Thanks to our impactful alliances with the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT) and John Deere, we have significantly strengthened the capacity, knowledge and skills of small-scale farming families, enabling them to further develop their production and economic systems through sustainable innovations.”

In the 1950s, we began operating in Asia, shipping eggs to war-torn South Korea and delivering Jersey cows to India. Today, we empower women in this same region, where cultural norms limit their potential. By forming self-help groups and cooperatives, we provide women like Ayesha with training in financial literacy and business development, so they can achieve independence and inspire other women and girls to dream big. Since beginning work in Latin America in the 1940s, we have given families a hand up, not just a handout. Fast forward to today, and this guiding principle thrives in places like Mexico, where we've partnered with women in the Kikibá collective to break restrictive barriers and achieve financial stability with their cage-free egg business. Heifer International was founded in 1944 on the belief that access to the right knowledge and resources can equip people to transform their lives and overcome hunger and poverty. Eighty years later, this belief still holds true as we work alongside local changemakers worldwide. Our impact is rooted in sustainable, locally led development, which includes supporting farmers in forming cooperatives and working toward a shared vision for the future. Ahead of #CoopsDay on July 6, meet the animal health workers, women-owned cooperatives and business leaders making headway in their communities and carrying this legacy forward.
