An innovation space for building the field of systemic investing. Initiated and supported by EIT Climate-KIC.

Info

The TransCap Initiative is a collaborative innovation space for developing, demonstrating, and scaling systemic investing in the places that matter most for human prosperity—such as cities, landscapes, and coastal zones—as well as in value chains and other real-economy systems. We apply systems thinking, human-centred design, and the principles of mission-driven innovation to explore how financial capital can catalyse the transformation of systems in service of a low-carbon, climate-resilient, just, and inclusive future. Our mission involves developing a knowledge and innovation base, testing novel concepts and approaches, and building a community of practice. In doing so, we recognise the complex adaptive nature of human and natural systems and the fundamental uncertainty that governs their evolution, and we thus emphasise the need for collaboration, experimentation, and learning. The places and value chains we intend to transform act as centres of gravity for our work. In each of these systems, we will work with challenge owners, communities, innovators, investors, and other stakeholders to design, structure, and finance strategic investment portfolios nested within a broader systems intervention approach. The TransCap Initiative has been initiated and is currently supported by EIT Climate-KIC.

We are living in a moment of new ideas. As the sense of #polycrisis deepens, many of us are looking for positive ways forward. Many new economic schools of thought and frameworks are being explored, a sign of the flourishing of alternative ways of thinking about what futures are possible. Ideas matter. We believe the work of ideas-based organisations is needed, where time is taken to explore the conceptual building blocks of a proposed course of action. The connections between ideas are also important. This is based on a simple logic: lots of ideas, and lots of initiatives, are needed to bring about transformation of our economy. And those ideas need to speak to each other, for collective momentum to build. Over the last year we’ve been working with Deep Transitions Lab to explore the connections between the ideas that underpin our work, both of which seek to transform our economies and societies. Our Head of Research Jess Daggers, PhD shares what has come out of this collaboration. She also explores the spectrum between visionary and implementable ideas, and the broader implications of how ideas-based organisations should be working to build a movement. How can we fund the transition to a sustainable and just food system in Switzerland? We’re excited to share that we’re kicking off a new #prototype to explore just that. With the generous support of Mercator Foundation Switzerland, Stiftung Fourfold, and Minerva Foundation, we will design a systemic investing program capable of catalyzing the transformation of Switzerland’s food system. In doing so, we will seek to build on the good work already underway and establish a core coalition of partners for the program’s  implementation. Find out more 👉🏽 https://lnkd.in/dPyBEMNC If you care about the future of food and how we could fund the transformation of food systems, get in touch. +++++++++ 𝑇ℎ𝑒 𝑇𝑟𝑎𝑛𝑠𝑐𝑎𝑝 𝐼𝑛𝑖𝑡𝑖𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑣𝑒 𝑖𝑠 𝑎 𝑛𝑜𝑛-𝑝𝑟𝑜𝑓𝑖𝑡 𝑜𝑝𝑒𝑛 𝑖𝑛𝑛𝑜𝑣𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 𝑖𝑛𝑖𝑡𝑖𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑣𝑒 𝑤𝑜𝑟𝑘𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑡𝑜 𝑏𝑢𝑖𝑙𝑑 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑓𝑖𝑒𝑙𝑑 𝑜𝑓 #𝑠𝑦𝑠𝑡𝑒𝑚𝑖𝑐𝑖𝑛𝑣𝑒𝑠𝑡𝑖𝑛𝑔. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫 𝐨𝐟 𝐠𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐩𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐭𝐨𝐠𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐢𝐧 𝐚 𝐫𝐨𝐨𝐦 𝐜𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐛𝐞 𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝. Especially when the work is to reimagine the way financing is purposed, designed, and managed. To make money a transformative force in building a low-carbon, climate-resilient, just, and inclusive society. It’s not easy work. So it’s critical to build and nurture a space that one of our #community described as feeling like “they are not alone in rowing upstream and against the current”. In an unexpectedly hot pub this London Climate Action Week, we gathered a group of #SystemicInvesting pioneers to do just that. Here’s a taste of some of the key topics that came out of our discussions: ⛯ 𝐑𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐠𝐧𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐰𝐞 𝐚𝐫𝐞. Despite how compelling this agenda feels to many people within our community, most investors are at the beginning of the impact journey. This is evidenced by both actual AUM, but also conversations that people in the field are having with their networks. We need new investment practices and instruments, but we also need to ensure we seed the next wave of asset managers who are fluent in systemic investing.  🔗𝐅𝐚𝐜𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬. The challenge of bringing together different types of capital – especially public finance, return-seeking investment capital, and philanthropic capital – came up again and again. We have to break down silos and create spaces to connect actors that need to interact (but don't necessarily do so on a regular basis) to really have a chance at delivering lasting impact.  👌🏽𝐒𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐮𝐚𝐠𝐞. We need to use language that these different actors can understand, and in some cases do the work of translation. We have to be able to articulate how our work fits with existing practices, rather than forcing others to understand and use our terminology. ⚙️𝐆𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐩𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥. We have to get into the nitty-gritty details of systemic investing and figure out how to engineer new investment models and bring them into the world – despite the fact that there is no guidebook on how to do that. This includes designing in justice, equity, diversity and inclusion effectively. (Watch this space for our Design Guide, which we’ll be releasing in stages from the Fall onwards). We’ll be feeding the insights from these discussions into our work. Thank you to all those who joined us. We’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments. #LCAW2024 +++++++++ 𝑇ℎ𝑒 𝑇𝑟𝑎𝑛𝑠𝑐𝑎𝑝 𝐼𝑛𝑖𝑡𝑖𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑣𝑒 𝑖𝑠 𝑎 𝑛𝑜𝑛-𝑝𝑟𝑜𝑓𝑖𝑡 𝑜𝑝𝑒𝑛 𝑖𝑛𝑛𝑜𝑣𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 𝑖𝑛𝑖𝑡𝑖𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑣𝑒 𝑤𝑜𝑟𝑘𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑡𝑜 𝑏𝑢𝑖𝑙𝑑 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑓𝑖𝑒𝑙𝑑 𝑜𝑓 𝑠𝑦𝑠𝑡𝑒𝑚𝑖𝑐 𝑖𝑛𝑣𝑒𝑠𝑡𝑖𝑛𝑔. Here is an interesting article by Jason W. Ingle of Third Nature Investments about his experience investing in Beyond Meat, one of the pioneers of the alternative protein movement. In it, Jason explains why single-asset investing with "impact tunnel vision" (in this case, reducing emissions from meat consumption, even if that comes at the expense of inferior nutritional value and worse customer experience) is unlikely to lead to transformative change in socio-technical systems, thereby providing practice-based arguments for adopting a more systemic approach to capital deployment. https://lnkd.in/dVekJPzq

Nachhaltig investieren. We are very excited to announce that we're strategically partnering with the Center for Sustainable Finance and Private Wealth (CSP) at the University of Zurich to build the field of systemic investing. As part of this partnership, we will contribute to CSP's training programs for wealth owners and a CSP-led guide to systemic investing. We will also collaborate on broader field-building efforts in Switzerland, North America, and other geographies. The first CSP-led training program to which we will contribute (alongside TWIST: Investing for Systems Change, MIT Sloan Sustainability Initiative, and Meridian Institute) will take place in Oslo from May 26-28, just before the 2024 edition of Katapult Future Fest. The second course, which will focus on polycapital approaches to investing, will be held from October 23-25, 2024, in Boston. Those interested in participating in these courses can sign up here: https://lnkd.in/eKkm6p-E
