About us
At Making Waves, we are committed to educational equity. Making Waves Education Foundation is a Bay Area nonprofit that supports Making Waves Academy – a public charter school with more than 1,100 5th through 12th grade students – and leads college and career programming with more than 500 college students. Knowing the opportunities that come with a college degree, we partner with historically underrepresented and underserved students to help make college affordable and graduation attainable. Centering the journeys of our students, our personalized approach includes college and career coaching, scholarships, and financial planning. Our alumni network includes more than 600 college graduates, who earn their degrees and land jobs at more than twice the rate of their first-generation, low-income peers, with 84% graduating debt-free.

“As children of immigrants and people of color, we are the trailblazers of our families,” shared Simren Sandhu during her speech at Making Waves Academy’s graduation this month. “Whatever challenges we have to face in the future, I’m sure that we will continue to persevere by taking it one day at a time,” shared Simren, who is planning to attend Harvard University this fall as a neuroscience major. Alongside Simren, 50% of this year’s grads are pursuing STEM fields – from biology to engineering to nursing. Others have chosen majors like business, fashion, and economics. 100% of this year's grads are pursuing higher education and the majority earned yearly scholarships and coaching from Making Waves Education Foundation. 🤩 Congrats and welcome to the 89 students who are the latest to join our college and career success program! They've earned $2.3 million total in need-based scholarships from Making Waves for up to six years of college. Plus, they're are paired with our team of college coaches, financial coordinators, and career specialists. “Being part of the Making Waves community means more than just earning a scholarship,” VP of Student Success Dr. Kristina Wright shared. “It’s about joining a network of like-minded individuals who are dedicated to excellence, collaboration, and making a positive impact. Our team is here to support students every step of the way, providing the resources, guidance, and encouragement needed to succeed." The majority of our students are first-generation college students and people of color. This year, students are from 15 #BayArea high schools and are enrolling at 30 colleges across the U.S. like Columbia University, Contra Costa College, Harvard University, Howard University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, California State University-Sacramento, San Francisco State University, UCLA, UC Santa Barbara, and the University of Southern California. In their applications, students shared about their personal 'why' for pursuing higher education, with many sharing their determination to break barriers, reach financial security, and pave the way for future generations. They are pursuing academic and career interests including biotechnology, business, engineering, education, medicine, psychology, and more. “This year promises to be filled with opportunities for growth, learning, and discovery,” shared Dr. Wright. “We’re committed to providing a supportive and stimulating environment where students can be vulnerable, seek support, and set goals that support them in achieving their life dreams” ➡ Read more: https://lnkd.in/gApVPVfi

🌊 “The Making Waves community is one that I’m grateful to have gotten the chance to be a part of and I know I can continue to be a part of post-grad," shared Elaine Fernandez, who is graduating this month with degrees in managerial economics and sociology from UC Davis. In addition to earning a spot in our Making Waves college and career success program for all four years of college, Elaine was selected in our first-ever cohort of marketing and storytelling interns. She also completed internships and externships with NielsenIQ, Project Destined, and Deloitte, which led to a full-time job offer with Deloitte. "Now, I feel ahead of the game and confident in the skills I have in my toolkit," Elaine shared. Describing her Making Waves college coaches as having “the biggest impacts for me throughout my college career," Elaine said the support system helped her "navigate any obstacle that came my way.” "I am excited to get to pay it forward and back as I continue to excel in my career trajectory," she shared. 🎉 Congratulations, Elaine!
