One of our core values is to build community – and we did just that at this summer's kick-off event for our newest college students! The team welcomed 89 new students from 15 different high schools across the #BayArea who are joining our college and career success program and heading to 30 different colleges and universities across the U.S. this fall. They've earned $2.3 million total in need-based college scholarships from Making Waves – plus are paired with our expert team of college coaches, financial coordinators, and career specialists. We're excited to support them as they pursue their academic and career interests in biotechnology, business, civil engineering, computer science, education, law, medicine, nursing, psychology, and more. “I’m supremely ambitious, and I don’t shy away from that. I want to be great; I want to be seen as great. I want to be a better version of myself every day,” shared Daniel Shaw. A member of the first-ever cohort of Making Waves students, Daniel has a bachelor’s degree in business management from Morehouse College and an MBA from UCLA. "If you are passionate, if you bring this idea of wanting more, to understand more, and to be better, ambition will come with it," shared the accomplished global business leader who has extensive experience in the #health and #wellness #technology space. “As children of immigrants and people of color, we are the trailblazers of our families,” shared Simren Sandhu during her speech at Making Waves Academy’s graduation this month. “Whatever challenges we have to face in the future, I’m sure that we will continue to persevere by taking it one day at a time,” shared Simren, who is planning to attend Harvard University this fall as a neuroscience major. Alongside Simren, 50% of this year’s grads are pursuing STEM fields – from biology to engineering to nursing. Others have chosen majors like business, fashion, and economics. 100% of this year's grads are pursuing higher education and the majority earned yearly scholarships and coaching from Making Waves Education Foundation. Plus, they're are paired with our team of college coaches, financial coordinators, and career specialists. “Being part of the Making Waves community means more than just earning a scholarship,” VP of Student Success Dr. Kristina Wright shared. “It’s about joining a network of like-minded individuals who are dedicated to excellence, collaboration, and making a positive impact. Our team is here to support students every step of the way, providing the resources, guidance, and encouragement needed to succeed." The majority of our students are first-generation college students and people of color. This year, students are from 15 #BayArea high schools and are enrolling at 30 colleges across the U.S. like Columbia University, Contra Costa College, Harvard University, Howard University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, California State University-Sacramento, San Francisco State University, UCLA, UC Santa Barbara, and the University of Southern California. In their applications, students shared about their personal 'why' for pursuing higher education, with many sharing their determination to break barriers, reach financial security, and pave the way for future generations.
