A memo to a higher office, open letter to the powers that be. To a god, a king, a head of state, a captain of industry. To the movers and the shakers, can't everybody see? (Second Nature - Rush - 1987) Utah stands as a beacon for entrepreneurs, offering a fertile ground for innovation and growth. The state’s entrepreneurial spirit is legendary, fostering a business climate that ranks among the nation’s finest. Opportunities abound for those ready to seize them. The entrepreneurial community here is a tight-knit tapestry of mentors and peers, ever-ready to lend a hand. It’s not uncommon to find the same dedicated faces at various events, echoing the loyal “Dead Heads” of the Grateful Dead, following their favorite band from show to show with unwavering support. Yet, even in this nurturing ecosystem, challenges persist. The warmth of the community sometimes overshadows the need for forthright feedback. We’ve all heard the adage: “If you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all.” But in our quest to be supportive, we must not shy away from the tough love that can spur growth. Honest, constructive criticism is the crucible in which true entrepreneurial mettle is tested and refined. The phenomenon of “ghosting” also casts a shadow on our collaborative efforts. The sudden silence from potential partners or mentors can derail even the most promising of ventures. Clear, consistent communication is the lifeblood of any partnership, and its absence can be a significant setback. To surmount these hurdles, we must cultivate an environment of transparency and constructive dialogue. It’s time to embrace the uncomfortable conversations that lead to progress. Let’s champion the kind of feedback that, while hard to hear, is laced with the intent to uplift and improve. We must also champion accountability and follow-through. Commitments should be honored, not just made; promises kept, not just spoken. This is the foundation of trust upon which successful collaborations are built. Supporting businesses means not just cheering for their successes but also recognizing when a venture may not be viable. Sometimes, the kindest act is to encourage a swift pivot or graceful exit, allowing entrepreneurs to apply their hard-earned lessons to new endeavors. In closing, Utah’s entrepreneurial landscape is ripe with potential, but it requires us to face its challenges head-on. Let’s pledge to foster a culture of honest feedback, accountability, and unwavering support. Together, we can ensure that Utah remains a stronghold of entrepreneurial success. Let me end by stating that I am as guilty of this behavior as anyone in the community. I commit to do better and be better. I am a new member of this community and I want to thank you for your patience with me.

Stop me if you have heard this one. A Founder, a Mentor and an Investor walk into a bar… Actually, I am looking for a founder, a mentor and an investor to join me in the Kinect Capital four-some at Central Bank’s CB Vault Startup Pitch Contest & Golf Tournament 2024. The event will take place on June 6th at 8:00am at the Ranches Golf Club in Eagle Mountain, UT. This tournament is unique in that each hole will feature one of CB Vault’s startup companies that will provide a “2 minute pitch” of their business. Based on voting results, startups (hole sponsors) will go home with a share of the $15,000 prize pot. Please send me a DM or email (james@kinectcapital.org) with your name or the name of someone within the Kinect Capital family that would like to participate.
