A memo to a higher office, open letter to the powers that be. To a god, a king, a head of state, a captain of industry. To the movers and the shakers, can't everybody see? (Second Nature - Rush - 1987) Utah stands as a beacon for entrepreneurs, offering a fertile ground for innovation and growth. The state’s entrepreneurial spirit is legendary, fostering a business climate that ranks among the nation’s finest. Opportunities abound for those ready to seize them. The entrepreneurial community here is a tight-knit tapestry of mentors and peers, ever-ready to lend a hand. It’s not uncommon to find the same dedicated faces at various events, echoing the loyal “Dead Heads” of the Grateful Dead, following their favorite band from show to show with unwavering support. Yet, even in this nurturing ecosystem, challenges persist. The warmth of the community sometimes overshadows the need for forthright feedback. We’ve all heard the adage: “If you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all.” But in our quest to be supportive, we must not shy away from the tough love that can spur growth. Honest, constructive criticism is the crucible in which true entrepreneurial mettle is tested and refined. The phenomenon of “ghosting” also casts a shadow on our collaborative efforts. The sudden silence from potential partners or mentors can derail even the most promising of ventures. Clear, consistent communication is the lifeblood of any partnership, and its absence can be a significant setback. To surmount these hurdles, we must cultivate an environment of transparency and constructive dialogue. It’s time to embrace the uncomfortable conversations that lead to progress. Let’s champion the kind of feedback that, while hard to hear, is laced with the intent to uplift and improve. We must also champion accountability and follow-through. Commitments should be honored, not just made; promises kept, not just spoken. This is the foundation of trust upon which successful collaborations are built. Supporting businesses means not just cheering for their successes but also recognizing when a venture may not be viable. Sometimes, the kindest act is to encourage a swift pivot or graceful exit, allowing entrepreneurs to apply their hard-earned lessons to new endeavors. In closing, Utah’s entrepreneurial landscape is ripe with potential, but it requires us to face its challenges head-on. Let’s pledge to foster a culture of honest feedback, accountability, and unwavering support. Together, we can ensure that Utah remains a stronghold of entrepreneurial success. Let me end by stating that I am as guilty of this behavior as anyone in the community. I commit to do better and be better. I am a new member of this community and I want to thank you for your patience with me.

It's difficult to look at someone who's hungry for feedback that their proverbial baby is ugly, but in entrepreneurship those are the conversations that keep your baby alive. Better to have your rough spots highlighted, instead of glossed over and allowed to fester until they become company-killers.

It is being the honest broker that acts as the safety valve between over eager entrepreneurs and disinterested investors. Someone needs to take the lumps from the ecosystem in order to keep it together. For over 40 years Kinect Capital has been that glue that holds the ecosystem together. It can be an unappreciated role but a necessary one but ultimately a rewarding one.

I love that you quoted Rush! One of my favorite songs from way back! Very thoughtful and you’re not the first person to point this out to me. We have a very supportive group of people in this valley but there are often offerings of support with very little follow-through. It happens a lot actually…

Thoughtful post. And helpful. Thank you. This really is the best entrepreneur ecosystem in the world (for me) but it does have many shortcoming. I firmly believe the vast majority of entrepreneurs and pioneers are underserved. A lot of unlocked potential!
