Last week, our summer interns at Kapiolani Medical Center for Women & Children, Pali Momi Medical Center, Straub Benioff Medical Center and within our HPH Shared Services departments, participated in an event called Friday Night at the ER. Throughout the simulated 24-hour game play, interns make managerial decisions for their unit in their hospital to best manage staffing as well as patient arrivals and transfers. This game allows interns to collaborate, gain a better understanding of how different departments work together in the hospital and strategize ways to best manage their hospital. Continue to follow us on social media as our interns continue throughout their internship. Three more weeks to go! #hphohana

In week two of the Summer Student Research Program (SSRP), the Scholars visited the island of Kauai to learn about the care provided by Kauai Medical Clinic and Wilcox Medical Center and meet with other organizations that share our mission to create a healthier Hawaii by focusing on educational, nutritional and environmental factors in our community. Our community partner, Kamehameha Schools, arranged for the Scholars to meet with the Waipa Foundation, Kumano I Ke Ala, Prince Kuhio’s birthplace caretakers, Ho'ola Lahui Hawai'i physicians and Alakoko Loko I’a to learn about land conservation, cultural education, rural medicine, farming efforts, Prince Kuhio’s leadership and efforts to restore the Alakoko Fishpond. The Scholars learned about land conservation and educational programs at the Waipa Foundation by hiking thru the ahupuaa and working on their farm. They learned about growing and harvesting kalo and the teamwork required to paddle a double-hulled canoe from interns at the Kumano I Ke Ala farm in Waimea. The Scholars came away inspired by Prince Kuhio’s leadership during the difficult and tumultuous years before and after the overthrow of the Hawaiian monarchy. The day ended with a field trip to the Alakoko Fishpond where restoration efforts by the community have not only created a healthier ahupuaa, but a deeper appreciation for the Hawaiian community’s depth of resource management knowledge.

Our mission is creating a healther Hawaii and one of the ways we can achieve that is by supporting healthier communities. This is why we're proud to support Hawaii Habitat for Humanity Association (HHFHA) by providing $500,000 in social-impact loans, which will allow HHFHA to make revolving loans to the Kauai- and Oahu-based affiliates to help the not-for-profit construct affordable single-family homes to be purchased by income-qualifying families. HPH's loan reflects our commitment to making social-impact investments to improve conditions that affect health where Hawaii's residents live, work, learn and play.
