In week two of the Summer Student Research Program (SSRP), the Scholars visited the island of Kauai to learn about the care provided by Kauai Medical Clinic and Wilcox Medical Center and meet with other organizations that share our mission to create a healthier Hawaii by focusing on educational, nutritional and environmental factors in our community. Our community partner, Kamehameha Schools, arranged for the Scholars to meet with the Waipa Foundation, Kumano I Ke Ala, Prince Kuhio’s birthplace caretakers, Ho'ola Lahui Hawai'i physicians and Alakoko Loko I’a to learn about land conservation, cultural education, rural medicine, farming efforts, Prince Kuhio’s leadership and efforts to restore the Alakoko Fishpond. The Scholars learned about land conservation and educational programs at the Waipa Foundation by hiking thru the ahupuaa and working on their farm. They learned about growing and harvesting kalo and the teamwork required to paddle a double-hulled canoe from interns at the Kumano I Ke Ala farm in Waimea. The Scholars came away inspired by Prince Kuhio’s leadership during the difficult and tumultuous years before and after the overthrow of the Hawaiian monarchy. The day ended with a field trip to the Alakoko Fishpond where restoration efforts by the community have not only created a healthier ahupuaa, but a deeper appreciation for the Hawaiian community’s depth of resource management knowledge.
