I would to extend my thanks to the Executive Committee of the Transportation Research Board for inviting me as a speaker and panelist along with David J. Ederer and Judy L. Shanley, Ph.D. during their most recent TRB Policy Session in Washington, DC.

We have come to the end of the second Workshop “Transport Planning: From Theory to Practice” organised by MIC-HUB and the foundation mobilità in città at Politecnico di Milano.   It was a pleasure working with such amazing professionals and bright students to understand how unequal distribution of mobility capabilities can exacerbate social exclusion and systemic inequalities.   On the last day, the students presented their projects for the Corvetto area of Milan. We were also treated to a stimulating talk about the importance of racial equity in transportation by Charles T. IKYMI: Last week, Equitable Cities LLC, under the leadership of Charles T. Brown, MPA, CPD, CEO & Founder, delivered a powerful Introduction to Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) to the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission (DVRPC). Over the course of two days, the room was filled with mostly planners, neighborhood district representatives, architects/designers, and public safety enthusiasts receiving their first exposure to #CPTEDs three generations of principles. While we know it is impossible to eliminate crime completely, CPTED enables government and resident stakeholders to collaboratively drive the creation of safe, coheisive neighborhoods and communities. CPTED is a tool to understand crime, the built environment, community contexts, and strategies to reduce opportunities for crime. I was introduced to Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design in a CJ class at Temple University. Since then I have been eager to learn all I can about this fascinating discipline. Thank you Equitable Cities LLC and Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission for hosting this insightful workshop! I look forward to presenting these principles at the upcoming Public Participation Task Force meeting.

The final episode of the "Small Towns, Healthy Places" podcast series was recently released. In this episode, hosts, Suzanne Kelley and Richard Amore, PLA/AICP reflect on the journey of the Health Equity and Community Design Technical Assistance Pilot. Our streets are designed to move vehicles as quickly as possible, at the expense of safety for everyone. As a result, the number of people hit and killed while walking continues to rise. Smart Growth America’s signature report, Dangerous by Design 2024, combines the latest federal data with lived experiences to unpack the connection between road design and the ever-increasing, record number of people struck and killed while walking. To change this trend, agencies and decision makers must abandon the deeply embedded, invisible yet powerful emphasis on speed, and make safety for all people a top priority of every dollar spent. Our recent site visit to Indiana as part of the Thriving Communities Program was filled with collaboration and insight. The site visits ensure that we, alongside our partners at the Rocky Mountain Institute, have the context necessary to effectively support the Indiana team. Our visit took us along the Sherman Park Drive area, where we had the privilege of meeting with key stakeholders and dedicated employees. In our discussions with representatives from the Department of Public Works, Department of Metropolitan Development, the Mayor’s Office, City Councilors, and esteemed anchor institutions like RecycleForce and the John Boner Neighborhood Centers, we saw firsthand the commitment to transforming Indianapolis into an equitable urban development. One highlight of our visit was the tour of RecycleForce, an e-waste recycling facility that not only champions environmental sustainability but also provides crucial skills and support to individuals reintegrating into the workforce after involvement with the justice system. Their advocacy for improved transit along the Sherman Park corridor emphasizes the interconnectedness of economic opportunity and community well-being. We also explored the Indy East Promise Zone, engaging with community hubs like Martin University, the John Boner Legacy Center, and the Community Justice Complex.
