👏 It’s a wrap! NJ TRANSIT, UITP, and Rutgers CAIT hosted the first of many workshops yesterday dedicated to planning and preparing transportation systems in New York and New Jersey for the FIFA World Cup 2026! The workshop convened experts from around the world at Rutgers University - Newark to share insights and best practices from previous large events, including the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Last Thursday the Rutgers School of Engineering hosted industry, government, and academic leaders from across NY and NJ to discuss critical transportation initiatives happening in the Northeast region. From updates on the Gateway Program to preparing transit systems for the 2026 Fifa World Cup, leaders at the Gateway Development Commission (GDC), NJ TRANSIT, Metropolitan Transportation Authority, The Port Authority of New York & New Jersey, New Jersey Department of Transportation, and other organizations shared their latest projects with an audience of 100 attendees. CAIT Director Dr. Ali Maher was proud to discuss the DataCity Smart Mobility Testing Ground at the inaugural Middlesex County Transportation Symposium yesterday! DataCity is a living laboratory spanning multiple miles across downtown New Brunswick, NJ, that has been equipped with advanced sensors for collecting smart-mobility data. This data will support the future of autonomous vehicles while improving transportation safety, congestion, and equity in the region. Joined by Dr. Peter Jin, Associate Professor in the Rutgers School of Engineering, Dr. Maher highlighted this innovative transportation project and the collaboration between Rutgers University, Middlesex County, and our project partners.

Acting Commissioner of the New Jersey Department of Transportation Fran O'Connor visited CAIT last week for a tour of the Rutgers Asphalt Pavement Lab! Lab Director Dr. Thomas Bennert demonstrated some of the pavement research happening at Rutgers that helps New Jersey build and maintain its roadways and critical transportation infrastructure. #pavement #transportation #rutgers
