At a trackside ceremony on the eve of the Formula E World Championship, the host City of Portland announced its signature to the #ZEVDeclaration and their commitment to phasing out the sale of fossil fuel vehicles by 2035. “Joining the ZEV Declaration is in direct alignment with the Portland ethos of protecting and preserving the environment," said Ted Wheeler, Mayor of Portland. "Being on the leading edge of a critical initiative is a familiar role for Portlanders who have always sought creative ways to solve challenges. Electric vehicle sales are surpassing expectations, growing 27% in Accelerating to Zero Coalition ZEV Declaration countries compared to 10.5% in the global light-duty vehicle market. Landmark regulations and incentives in countries like Canada, the UK, Türkiye, and New Zealand are driving this transition, with nations like Finland reaching an impressive 50% EV share. The global shift towards zero-emission vehicles is gaining momentum, exemplified by Türkiye's rise from 1% to 6% EV sales in just a year and India's 70% growth in EV registrations. They join 11 other emerging markets by pledging to work towards all new sales of cars and vans being #zeroemission by 2040. Official announcements took place at this year's #ITF24 Summit — a signal of ambition from these growing markets that demonstrates a clear step in their electric vehicle transition. 🚗Our updated Land Transport Guidance marks a significant milestone in the journey towards a more sustainable automotive industry. For the first time, this update allows automakers to set science-based targets to align their largest source of emissions - those from customers driving vehicles - with the 1.5°C goal set out in the Paris Agreement. The updated guidance includes a pledge to phase out petrol and diesel vehicles by 2035 in key markets globally. It also encourages automakers to commit to Accelerating to Zero Coalition's international Zero Emission Vehicles (ZEV) Declaration: a pledge to work towards all sales of new cars and vans being zero-emission globally by 2040, and by no later than 2035 in leading markets.
