It would've been a great review too but my passion died. I was deeply disappointed with this one. A Dowry of Blood was an absolute masterpiece but this seems like a completely different author wrote this one. It was incredibly slow and boring and all of the cool aspects were completely overlooked. The only black character was also used as a token back character and I don't feel that her story was shared enough and she was just used for the two men to come into each others lives. The supposed demon possession was barely a thing. There was a lot of cool aspects like I said but they were just ignored. I could go on but overall, this was not great.

During dinner, Umma tells Ji-won that the eyes are the best part of the fish because they are not only delicious but bring good Happy publication day!
During dinner, Umma tells Ji-won that the eyes are the best part of the fish because they are not only delicious but bring good luck too. After always declining, she decides to try it out and realizes that her mother has been correct this whole time. When the family learns of Appa’s marital affair, he immediately abandons the entire family.
Her Umma and younger sister are devastated and heartbroken, leaving it up to Ji-won to take care of them both. In a few months, Umma begins dating a man called George with beautiful blue eyes. He is condescending, offensive, racist, misogynistic and in no time at all, Ji-won and her sister grow to hate him. He fetishes them and blatantly watches other Asian women, making for a hostile and uncomfortable environment. Umma is obsessed with George and doesn’t take much notice of his horrible behavior or her daughter’s discomfort.
On top of this, Ji-won grapples with the struggles of friendship and failing school. Her dreams become vivid and violent. In them, she sees beautiful blue eyes that follow her around. She walks into rooms that are full of delicious bloody eyes, good enough to eat and look just like George’s. Soon, the fascination of blue eyes takes Ji-won over and it becomes all she can think about. She begins to spiral and decides that maybe her dreams should become a reality because she deserves to do something about it and save her family from George. After all, Umma did say eating eyes will bring good luck and they could use a lot of that at a time like this.
I loved the Korean-American representation with a complex, family dynamic. The depiction of the culture and food was very well done. There is a lot of profound commentary on racial and gender discrimination but also how Asian women in particular are treated. The unraveling of Ji-won is fascinating and watching her become unhinged and fully commit to her rage was delightful. She may be slowly descending into madness but you can’t help but to cheer her on.
A brilliant, feminist horror novel is perfect for the summer and just what I was looking for! I can’t recommend this enough as it is such a strong debut. Monika Kim is an upcoming author that we should be sure to keep an eye out for (pun intended)! Thank you to Netgalley and Kensington Books for an advanced copy of this!
Forgive me not is about how the system constantly fails families and children who get caught into it. I had no idea this was supposed to be dystopian Forgive me not is about how the system constantly fails families and children who get caught into it. I had no idea this was supposed to be dystopian until later but imo it wasn’t really. This just seemed super realistic to me and not as dsytopian as I thought the trails would be. I wish for more character connections and possibly no dual POV because I don’t know if it was really needed here. I do see why it was added though but I think because of that it made the characters a bit surface level when I know this could’ve gone deeper. Overall, a good read that explored heavy but important topics.

Solid thriller overall, which is high praise from me as I've been extremely disappointed with many thrillers the last few years. This one is a pretty Solid thriller overall, which is high praise from me as I've been extremely disappointed with many thrillers the last few years. This one is a pretty easy read and does wrap up well. It is a little anticlimactic at the end but I do enjoy Wendy Walker overall.

A lot of this didn't make sense and I felt pretty bored for most of it. I didn't care for the characters either as well as found the 3 different story lines unnecessary. I personally don't want to be bored if I'm reading a horror book. There is also a lot of violence and trauma (rape scene) so just a warning there.
Also i'm sorry but if you tell a poor child who's blind you have a magic stick.....and then the mother proceeds to ask for your number?!!?!?!? File under things that would never happen.

In my review for Wendig’s previous book, (The Book of Accidents) I mentioned a few things that are exactly true for this one. -Reminiscent of Stephen King -Too long and could’ve used some editing to be shorter -Pretty good at first but then kind of drags on but that goes hand in hand with how long it is IMO
Both books are pretty similar with the pacing as well but moving on from his last book. This book becomes dark and full of gore and I thought that was well done. I enjoyed the creepy parts a lot. There were a little bit too many characters to keep track of which is fair since its about a town going crazy but I could’ve done without a couple of the POVs and some of the political commentary which I never want to hear about in any book in general. I think this authors books would be much stronger if they were shorter, honestly. Anyway, another solid 3 stars from this author.
