She did way too many annoying voices that hurt my ears. I don’t know why, it was so unnecessary and really took away from the story. The book itself isn’t bad, I thought it was alright but it’s definitely too long and maybe a bit complicated to be called middle grade. Maybe my review would’ve been hire if it weren’t for the audiobook but I don’t think I’ll continue the series.

Rui: “I was told that as well and I have to admit so far I’m disappointed. I was expecting something more.”
This is a weird way to start a review but let me explain. So first of all, I have the same reaction as Rui. Lina is supposed to be this amazing assassin in all the lands but I find that so hard to believe. We are told over and over how fierce and bad ass she is but she’s not even close, in my opinion.
She’s just talk and constantly viciously snarling snarling. Her best comebacks are just vulgar hand signs like flipping someone off. She comes off as a child. In that alone, we never see her kill anyone or do anything cool. She’s always caught and embarrasses herself. I just didn’t believe it. I’m super disappointed because I feel like the story is pretty good for the most part, minus the romance I kind of could have done without. I don’t know if I will continue the series but perhaps Lina will redeem herself in the next book? But even now it’s kind of too late because the ending makes it feel like cheating. I don't know if this is a spoiler at all but just in case I'm hiding this review.

I found the main character whiney and insufferable and overall just a jerk to everyone around them. I think it’s for a redemption arc and growth for the end but I just didn’t think it was necessary to make them so unpleasant. I didn’t care for the love triangle either. I never do but I would’ve preferred if the POV was anyone else just because of how annoying and cringe I found Gem.
Why would reincarnated gods be going to school? I never understood that lol. That aside - the pacing was too slow and uneven and just the young adult drama was not for me. I wish this was more written for adults because it probably would've been better. I do appreciate the representation because I think that’s the strongest part of the book. That being said, I will not be continuing the series.

A lot of them were flat and felt like a cardboard cutout with a name. That being said, the book itself is way too long. The audiobook is 17 hours - it didn’t need to be that long because I felt like a lot of it was filler. I’m not too familiar with the mythology and retelling so I can’t speak on that.

It definitely gives Percy Jackson vibes and I thought it was a standalone but based off the ending - it isn’t. I kind of wish it was a standalone because I’m getting over series but that’s my own problem.
The book itself is a lot of fun and Zachary is a sweet character who I constantly wanted to give a hug through the pages. There’s a lot of action as well as getting to hear Zach’s struggle as the only Chinese kid in school. There’s also a lot of mythology and history throughout the book that was just kind of dropped. I feel like some of it would be hard for a middle grade kid to follow.
3.5, decided to round up to 4 because I think I just wasn’t in the mood for a middle grade when I was reading it and that’s more on me rather than the book plus I will continue the series! Thank you to Netgalley for an advanced copy of the book....more
