I don’t think men can write realistic women at all, unfortunately. Zuretta seemed not real but also came off as an old woman. Possibly also because this takes place in the past so that’s why she was written this way? I don’t know but in any case I couldn’t connect to her. It’s an easy read even if it’s a little slow sometimes. It wasn't bad overall but not my favorite! I think it's interesting it is based off real event as well....more

I liked The Great Gatsby but this felt like a fan fiction since the author didn't change the names and it was so, extremely boring. There's barely any magic either and not much of an LGBTQ representation, at least in my opinion. Daisy was much more annoying here too. I wouldn't recommend this one to anyone.

An apothecary that dispenses poisons to men who have wronged their wives. Also, the cover was just lovely and fits so well with it. This is told is dual timelines with the present day and the 1700’s. I really enjoyed Nella and Eliza’s characters, I thought their relationship was precious as well.
Caroline was alright. I mean, I liked her and really liked how she handled her husbands affair but I thought the apothecary side was much more interesting. I’m not sure how historically accurate it is so I can’t speak on that at all. I did think it was be a bit more thrilling than it was but that was just my own thought.
Overall, I did enjoy this and enjoyed the narrators too. It took me a long time to get through the book even though I liked it. I think if I had to read it it would’ve taken longer.

I was a little bored and I think the book suffers from too much description and details of things that don't add to the story. I expected something a little different based off the synopsis as well. I think the idea was great but it wasn't executed as well as I had hoped. Thank you to Netgalley and to the publisher for an advanced copy of this book! ...more

I had expected a story between three women and a lovely friendship blossoming between them but I didn't really get that. I liked that all three of them had different situations and were strong, smart in a time of Hussein's rule. I loved the idea around it but it was slow paced.
Also, it kind of reminded me of American Dirt as a white women is writing a POV of Iraqi women. Wilkinson definitely did her research and she did live there, based it off her experience but I don't know how I feel about that. Overall, I just couldn't connect with this and wasn’t what I expected. Thank you to Netgalley and Kensington for the advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review....more

A death happens in the beginning of this story and it opens up to how a family copes with it. They decide not to tell Fannie who is in a high risk pregnancy and could lose the baby if she finds out of this death. I understand what this family was trying to do but wow, I was stressed for everyone trying to hide this secret. I also think if I was in Fannie’s situation I would be so upset if my family hid from me that my sister died! Not much else happens after this event takes place so I found myself losing interest quickly. I thought the authors note explaining that this was based off her family story made this feel more surreal.

I do love how much research she does and how she manages to make history alive. The beginning was just too dry for me and I almost quit. Useless description and very repetitive. Honestly I was bored to death and it almost killed me to finish this. This was also an audiobook so you’d think it would’ve made it easier. Every time I pressed play I felt like I was torturing myself.
