Nikki Grimes is a beautiful writer and one of my favorite poets. I’ve read books by her before this one, so I knew to expect and was already familiar with the verse this was written in. Her memoir is one I think many people can empathize or relate to, even though she was born in 1950. A lot of her life experiences reflect the same things and feelings teens today might also be going through. Such a haunting and inciteful book, it’s one that will stay with me for a long time. ...more

It's really weird that I didn't like this book because I am absolutely gaga over the first two books in this series. Both were 5 star reads. But while those felt powerful and deeply moving, this one was repetitive to me and I found myself rolling my eyes.
Maybe this book caught me in a bitchy time, but this third book felt convoluted and fake to me. Maybe I'll reread it in the future and see if I just have a case of the crankies or something....

“I SWEAR SOMETIMES
it feels like God be flashing photos of his children, awkward, amazing, tucked in his wallet for the world to see. But the world don't wanna see no kids, and God ain't no pushy parent so he just folds and snaps us shut.”
Heartbreaking. In the best possible way, this book was utterly heartbreaking.
When Wil's brother is killed in a gang related shooting, he does the only thing he knows how to do: follow the neighborhood rules. So he gets a gun and decides to kill the person who killed his brother. But what he doesn't expect is an elevator ride filled with the past, and to face what he hasn't had to face until now.

you never want to see it on the outside of them"
Jason Reynolds is an author I discovered last year and I have yet to pick up a book by him I haven't loved. His writing style is effortless to read, and yet packs a huge emotional and important impact. This was such a powerful read, I hope readers everywhere and of all ages (teen and up) read it and are affected by it in a positive way. After three book wins in a row, I'll be a forever Reynolds reader.
I'm having a hard time processing all the feels right now so this was a shorter review than I usually do. Just read the dang book!
“MY MOTHER USED TO SAY,
I know you're young, gotta get it out, but just remember, when you're walking in the nighttime, make sure the nighttime ain't walking into you.”
“Late into the night I write and the pages of my notebook swell from all the words I’ve pressed onto them. It almost feels like the more I 5 stars!

Well, I completely understand why this book is winning all of the awards. It is absolutely magnificent.
Poet X a story, told in verse, about Xiomara a teenage girl from a religious background who has poetry bursting from inside her. Xiomara finds herself at odds many times with her mother who wants her to be a devout and innocent young girl, while her father and brother wish she would be silent and become invisible.
When a poetry club forms at school Xiomara is dying to join but it conflicts with her confirmation lessons and she knows her mother will never approve. Will Xiomara ever be able to express the words she keeps locked deep inside?
“The world is almost peaceful when you stop trying to understand it.”
This is a book I’ve been meaning to read for a while but kept putting it off for some reason. I figured I would like it, I didn’t expect to be blown away by it and fall in love with Xiomara’s voice and story. I devoured this book in a matter of hours, completely sucked in with Acevedo’s words. I ended up crying while reading this book, my heart bled for Xiomara and all that she had to face.
An unforgettable read that I highly recommend. This is a story that needs to be heard and one I won’t ever forget.
“I only know that learning to believe in the power of my own words has been the most freeing experience of my life. It has brought me the most light. And isn't that what a poem is? A lantern glowing in the dark.” ...more

I had the privilege of hearing Engle speak this past fall and I immediately bought this book after hearing her story because I wanted to know more. I found Engle's story to be haunting, because while it happened from 1950's-1960's, this book is extremely relevant for many children now.
Beautifully written, I am eager to devour more by Engle. Hopefully sooner rather than later.

I can see how this isn't for everyone, I do. But for some reason, Lovelace's words resonate deeply in me. There were times when she made me smile so huge, and other times I found tears in my eyes. A fast read, but an intense one. I cannot wait until her third book comes out, I will be reading it as fast as I can get my grubby hands on it.
2018 is definitely the year I embraced poetry. Never in my life have I read as much poetry and verse as I did this year, without it being required of me.
Powerful. That's the first word that comes to me when thinking about this collection of poems.
Poetry is not really my thing, I've be 5 stars!

Poetry is not really my thing, I've been getting into it a bit more in the past couple of months. I've heard of this collection of poems compared to Rupi Kaur, but I would disagree. That collection of poems seemed so disingenuine and fake, in my opinion. Lovelace, her poems felt like they were from the heart, she didn't try to use a shock factor to get her point across.
There are so many people I already recommended this book to, so many pictures I took of the poems and then texted to my friends. It's not a book for everyone, but I wish everyone would read it.

Jason Reynolds is an author I've been meaning to read for a while now. Usually I am not one for poetry but I've been trying to set aside my prejudices of it lately. Reynolds delivers a powerful letter, one that speaks to all kinds of readers. I really enjoyed this small book, it took about 20 minutes to read and I found myself reading slower to savor the words.
