Seeing this Barred Owl for the first time in the wild was the absolute highlight of this trip to Vancouver Island. I saw "something" fly and then saw robins bothering him. He sat patiently for a few minutes allowing me to get this shot.

View of a Great Gray Owl (Strix nebulas) after it dropped into the roadside ditch in pursuit of some meal which proved unsuccessful at the time. This was in the mixed woods on the edge of the boreal forest north of Opal, Alberta, Canada.

The wonderfully characterful Little Owl is always a pleasure to watch & photograph. The lions share of their diet is made up of earth worms & invertebrates, including a lot of beetles.

Slightly disconcerting for the little chap who's sharing his perch here, I imagine.

Norfolk, England.

Apparently this little bird only comes out on special occasions! Echo the Eastern Screech Owl at Mountsberg is 16 years young - very impressive for a little owl!

Stunning little owl love the character of these beautiful little owl

The Great Gray Owl scientific name is Strix Nebulosa. Both its common name and the scientific are well suited for this large Gray Owl. Strix means to utter shrill sounds and Nebulosa means misty or cloudy referring to its gray colour.

Huge thank you to Ian howells wildlife photography for a great session in the hide. Only the 1 Tawny visit due to the weather but that was enough for me! Another shot off the list!

Until recently this has been one of our favorite spots for photographing Burrowing Owls. However, recently we have found that we must really look to find one or two. On this day we found this little guy all alone. The greatest threat to burrowing owls is habitat destruction and degradation caused primarily by land development and ground squirrel/prairie dog control measures. Despite their protected status, burrowing owls are often displaced and their burrows destroyed during the development process.

Taken back in 2015 from a hide.

Thats stare really goes through you!!

Many thanks for the recent support - have been short of time lately but will try hard to catch up!!

This is the same Owl that I photographed yesterday as it left this perch and flew by me.

It was a unique experience to observe a Great Horned Owl hunting in an open field in daylight. I think this behavior was forced by the extreme cold we have been experiencing here over the past several days. More calories are required for survival..

Short-eared Owl, Somerset UK, one of these days i'll get one of these in some sunshine !

A photographic day at the Hawk Conservancy Trust. Well worth a visit if you like birds of prey and great photo opportunities.

Another owl I haven't seen this year so here is a new addition from an encounter last February. This was the first time I have ever seen a Barred Owl outside of a deep forest habitat.

This one was hunting on the edge of open fields where we usually look for Great Gray Owls or Snowy Owls.

Thorhild County, Alberta.

I was so excited to photograph a barn owl for the first time this week. I've been back since to try and catch it in better light, but no luck yet. I'll keep trying!

Same owl but a little more relaxed except for his talons !
