Happy Window Wednesday

This is Delfshaven, a borough of Rotterdam. It was a separate municipality until 1886.

The town of Delfshaven was actually built around the port of the city of Delft. Delft itself is not connected to a major river, so in 1389 a harbour was created about 6 miles south of the city. This settlement was named Delfshaven (meaning Port of Delft).

The historic centre of Delfshaven has been carefully preserved and houses a number of museums, a brewery and many dining and drinking facilities.

(For viewers wondering why there aren't any people around: I made sure I was there early enough on a Sunday morning. No people, better light. Shortly after taking this picture there were loads of people around to go to church, so my timing was great!)

This historic bridge was originally completed in 1888 and rebuilt in 1980. The round stone pier was part of the original structure. This line was the first major north, south passenger rail route constructed after the civil war. This line was referred to as the "Chattanooga Choo Choo."

The winter day was beautiful but crisp up upon the upper ramparts of the historic Stirling Castle. This view is looking north east towards the 220Ft Victorian 1869 Wallace Monument which stands on the summit of Abbey Craig with the Clackmannanshire Ochil Hills as a magnificent backdrop.

The Benbow Historic Inn, a Garberville resort in the redwoods, was designed by architect Albert Farr, who was most noted for The Wolf House—the home he designed for author Jack London in Glen Ellen, CA. Farr was commissioned by the Benbow family to create the cornerstone for the resort community they intended to build in their 1,290 acre valley.

The “Hotel Benbow” (as it was originally called) opened to the public in July of 1926. Built by the Benbow family—nine talented brothers and sisters who also constructed the Benbow Dam, Power Company, and later, the Golf Course and RV Park. The hotel became a popular destination for motoring tourists traveling up the newly-completed Redwood Highway.

The combination of seclusion and elegant hospitality also served as quite an attraction for the early Hollywood elite. Spencer Tracy, Clark Gable, Alan Ladd, Charles Laughton, Nelson Eddy and Jeanette MacDonald, Joan Fontaine, Basil Rathbone were all patrons of the Inn. Dignitaries such as Eleanor Roosevelt, Herbert Hoover and Lord Halifax also enjoyed the Benbow hospitality.

In this once vibrant community, homesteaders who settled here near the turn of the 19-century clustered their farms to share labor and community. The U.S. Post Office named this community Grovont, now known as "Mormon Row."

#AbFav_BRIDGES_🌉

The Bridge was built in 1901 during the South African War by the Fortress Company of the Royal Engineers in order to gain military access to the Island.

Herron said the 117-year-Old Wooden Bridge, linking Milnerton to Woodbridge Island, was the only Bridge of its kind in South Africa.

Locals call it the Black Bridge.

Waiting for restoration, it was now a sanctuary for birds!

Paul has fabulous memories of this bridge, he had the good fortune to grow up in such a beautiful place, driving his bike to the sea, surfboard under the arm... my daredevil.

A preserved farm, roughly translated "the hill yard" that is undergoing preservation and display. the oldest building, which I think is here in the foreground, dates from 1549 or so. The proprietor is one of the last of the line and is trying to make this a thriving tourist stop. In summer it looks like it would be amazing.

Established in 1839, Hahndorf is Australia’s oldest surviving German settlement, located in the Adelaide Hills, 28km southeast of Adelaide, South Australia.

Hahndorf’s pioneer settlers were refugees escaping from religious persecution in Prussia (a north-eastern Germanic state). Thirty-eight Old Lutheran families settled the area after arriving in South Australia in 1838.

On their arrival in the new colony, Dirk Hahn, who captained the Zebra, had become deeply concerned about the welfare of his passengers. During his stay in Adelaide, he supported them to find extra land in the Adelaide Hills. This land was in addition to what the much larger group had already purchased just outside the capital of Adelaide.

Thanking the Captain for his assistance, they named the town Hahndorf (Hahn’s village) after him.

Hahndorf is located just 30 minutes from Adelaide via the South Eastern Freeway, with the Hahndorf exit clearly marked.
