The steam locomotive is on display opposite the local museum in Altenbeken, a town that is and has been dominated by the railway. The main sight of Altenbeken is the large limestone viaduct that used to be a key element of east-west railway lines in Germany.

Kettwig is the southernmost borough of the city of Essen in western Germany and, until 1975, was a town in its own right. Kettwig is situated next to the Ruhr river, at a median height of 53 metres above sea level.

A bridge over the Ruhr was first mentioned in 1282 and heavily fought for during the Thirty Years War.

Thanks to not having any important major industries, Kettwig emerged from World War II largely unscathed and with most of its medieval old town still intact. The tower of the Market Church dates back to the 14th century, with additions from 1720.

These lovely daffodils are early bloomers in the woods in my back yard. A joy to see every year and a gift from Nature because I don't know how they got there.

San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park

It's been already a week since my return back and as I have been busy I had no free time to review photos from my recent trip to Greece. So I made a dive into my archives and that photo from Boston's north end caught my attention. A historic alley I would describe it for 2 reasons. First, this alley is part of the famous "Freedom Trail" and second, the wall on the right of the frame is the Old North church, one of Boston's most historic buildings. During the American Revolution, on the steeple of that very church 2 lanterns were carried to warn the American militia that the British chose to advance against Concord by sea.

This image, a historical interpretation of an old train trestle, features the longest wooden train trestle bridge in Saskatchewan at 432m in length. It was completed in 1929. Although unused since the last train crossed it in 1979 it still serves as a physical and historic landmark when travelling along Highway 41. The original name Maskunow means "a trail" in the Cree language but when the local Post Office was opened by the federal government the new name was changed Meskanaw. While traveling in 2008 the trestle stood out from other trestles seen in the province.

Leeds Castle is a wonderful and historic castle in Kent, England.

A castle has existed on the site since 857. In the 13th century, it came into the hands of King Edward I, for whom it became a favorite residence; in the 16th century, Henry VIII used it as a dwelling for his first wife, Catherine of Aragon.

The present castle dates mostly from the 19th century. It has been open to the public since 1976. (wikipedia)

Delfshaven is a borough of Rotterdam on the right bank of river Nieuwe Maas, in South Holland, the Netherlands. It was a separate municipality until 1886.

The town of Delfshaven grew around the port of the city of Delft. Delft itself was not located on a major river, so in 1389 a harbour was created about 10 km (6 mi) due south of the city, to be able to receive seafaring vessels and avoid tolls being levied by the neighbouring and competing city of Rotterdam. This settlement was named Delfshaven ("Port of Delft").

On 1 August 1620 the Pilgrim fathers left Delfshaven with the Speedwell. Since then, the town's Oude Kerk has also been known as the Pelgrimskerk, or in English, the "Pilgrim Fathers Church".

Fishing, shipbuilding and the distillery of jenever were the main sources of income. The Dutch East India Company had important wharfs and warehouses in Delfshaven, and one of the Dutch West India Company's most famous commanders, Piet Hein, was born here.

Delfshaven belonged to the city and municipality of Delft until 1811, when it became a separate municipality. Delfshaven was annexed by Rotterdam in 1886 at its own request. The current borough has about 73,000 inhabitants. Its small historic centre has been carefully preserved. It features modest local museums, a brewery and various dining and drinking facilities.

Delfshaven escaped the bombing of Rotterdam by the Luftwaffe on May 14, 1940. Later during the Second World War, the area around the Groot Visserijplein and other parts of the western city of Rotterdam were destroyed by allied bombing on March 31, 1943.

Veere is a municipality with a population of 22,000 and a town with a population of 1,500 in the southwestern Netherlands, in the region of Walcheren in the province of Zeeland.

The name Veere means "ferry": Wolfert Van Borssele established a ferry and ferry house there in 1281. This ferry he called the "camper-veer" or "Ferry of Campu" by which name Camphire it was known, at least in England, until the seventeenth century. It eventually became known as "de Veer". In the same year 1281 Wolfert also built the castle Sandenburg on one of the dikes he had built. On 12 November 1282, Count Floris V. thereupon issued a charter by which Wolfert received the sovereignty to the land and castle with the ferry and ferry house. From that time on Wolfert was given the title of Lord Van der Veer. Veere received city rights in 1355.

Sadly this oldest church in Southern Alberta was totally destroyed by a fire on May 22, 2017.

This historic church was constructed in 1875. At that time native people were still hunting bison on the prairies. The young nation of Canada was only eight years old; the Canadian Pacific Railway still nine years in the future. And this church would become the heart of a thriving community, Morleyville, and for a time the largest settlement in what would be southern Alberta.

Street life in the historic center of Lucca, in a rainy day. At the end of the square you can see the basilica di San Frediano, that was consecrated in 1147.

It was built on top of another church dating back to the 8th century A.D.

The Gooderham and Worts Distillery was founded in 1832.

In 1871, Gooderham and Worts became one of the largest exporters in spirit production, shipping millions of gallons across Canada as well as North and South America – and at one point was the largest distillery in the world. The distillery officially closed its doors in 1990, after 153 years of production.

In the 1990s, The Distillery District was granted new life as it became a popular destination for film – it was the number one film location in Canada and the second outside of Hollywood, with over 1700 movies filmed here.

In 2001 the area underwent a huge project to restore the district in order to turn it into a car-free neighbourhood that would preserve its heritage, ‘entirely dedicated to arts, culture and entertainment.’ It finally opened in May 2003 and is now one of Canada’s top tourist attractions as well as a unique neighbourhood that is a vital part of the city of Toronto.

Built in 1897 this railway bridge connected the cities of Lage and Hameln.

It was demolished in 1945 (5th of April) and rebuilt in 1949 with approval of the British occupying power.

After the closure of the railway line in 1980 it became a historic monument in 1989. "The special monument value is based on the fact that the Weser Bridge Hameln is the only surviving example of a railway bridge over the Weser with a semi-parabolic beam. The last time such bridge constructions were carried out in the Weser area were in 1900 and 1910."

This would be great taken at night but the car parking may lessen the impact. A social issue for another day.

This is a local landmark that has fallen into disrepair. Built around 1880 the house must have been magnificent in its day. It still appears to be relatively good shape.

To my knowledge, there are 8 EMD SD45s in preservation around the United States. I've been told that only three are operational, two are seen here.

Typically, you can find both of these beautiful beasts in Duluth at the Lake Superior Railroad Museum, but for a weekend in June 2022, they were on display at St. Paul Union Depot for Train Days.

Now a treasured tradition, a night shoot kicks off the weekend. Every year there's something in the lineup that's sought after more than the rest. This year it was the SD45s.

With a couple BNSF hoppers displayed in the background, it's an optical illusion that these two are at the head of a freight train. One wonders if these two ever saw service together back in the BN days.

Both locomotives are over 50 years old, NP 3617 built in 1967, and GN 400 built in 1966. But neither look their age, looking fresh out of EMD's shop. That's what happens when organizations take pride in their equipment.

A personal thank you to everyone involved to make Union Depot Train Days 2022 happen. Haven't missed a Train Days yet, hoping the streak will continue. Also thanks to Steve Glischinski & Chris Guss for organizing another phenomenal night photo shoot.

Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church was established in its current location in 1824 by Rev. James Smith. The current white frame church building is over 100 years old. It is one of two Franklin County, Alabama churches listed on the North Alabama Hallelujah Trail. The church is surrounded on three sides by a 500+ grave cemetery.

Completed in 1939, this venerable structure spans the Illinois River at Lacon Illinois. It has beautiful Art Deco elements on its concrete pillars which were so popular in that era. It was built to replace the last floating pontoon bridge still in service in Illinois which had been constructed in the 1800’s. The view of the river from this bridge is absolutely outstanding.
