Nicole Kidman has told how she thinks it is 'lazy' to solely rely on chemistry when casting lovers, after her steamy sex scenes with Zac Efron were revealed.

The Aussie actress, 56, was asked about Anne Hathaway's experience of being told to 'make out' with potential co-stars as part of audition chemistry tests in the 2000s.

Addressing the topic, Nicole urged directors to guide actors through intimate scenes.

She told The Hollywood Reporter's Drama Actress Roundtable: 'There's a way you can shoot things, I think just relying on chemistry is lazy. There's the writing, there's the interaction - you can literally be directed through it.'

'Also, you can not have chemistry, and onscreen, it's made,' she added.

During the group interview, Nicole also passionately agreed with Jennifer Aniston when she spoke about how 'uncomfortable' it is kissing a stranger in an audition.

Jennifer said: 'When you're in an audition room, you're already at a disadvantage, maybe you'd have chemistry with this person if you were in a different environment and not, like, "Create chemistry. Ready? Go!"'
