JMU defensive backs

JMU footballs recruiting class of 2025 will be head coach Bob Chesney's first full recruiting cycle for the Dukes after he was hired on December 7, 2023.

Roy'Marr Thomas | edge | Seffner, Fl. 

The 6-foot-2 225-pound Thomas committed to JMU on June 30 after taking his official visit on June 21. He holds offers from UCF, USF and Louisville among others. He racked up 21 tackles for loss and 16 sacks during his junior season. He's the third edge rusher in JMU's 2025 class — all three are from Florida. 

Parker Cunningham | offensive line | South Park, Pa. 

Cunningham committed to JMU on June 28 and was recruited by mostly FCS schools. Despite not being highly recruited he's listed at a monstrous 6-foot-4 290-pounds, which should have offensive line coach Chris Smith licking his chops. 

Grayson Gilmore | edge | Tampa, Fl.

Gilmore committed to JMU on June 28. The 6-foot-2 225-pound defensive end holds offers from most notably Temple, FAU, FIU and Bowling Green. 

Brian Hnat | tight end/athlete | Andover, Mass.

Hnat committed to JMU on June 27 after being offered by the Dukes on the 11th. The 6-foot-5 uber-athletic playmaker lined up mostly as a wide receiver for Andover High School and caught 40 passes for 619 yards and ten touchdowns his junior year. He also has experience playing corner back and linebacker where he recorded seven interceptions and 40 tackles last season. He wasn't highly recruited, but received offers from most notably Army, Temple and UMass. 

Ethan Gerula | tight end | Roswell, Ga.

The 6-foot-3 220-pound tight end committed to JMU on June 27 after an official visit on June 21-23. The Dukes beat out FAU, which he visited a week prior, and Sun Belt rival Marshall. Gerula caught 17 passes for 334 yards and eight touchdowns in 10 games during his junior season. 

Jamarice Wilder | running back | Sarasota, Fl.

The 5-foot-9 180-pound Wilder committed to JMU on June 27. He was originally committed to Colorado but decommitted on Nov. 27. He holds offers from most notably Cincinnati, Michigan State, Indiana, Pitt and Iowa State. He rushed for 1271 yards on 8.5 yards per carry and 25 touchdowns his junior season for Venice High School — he'll play out his senior year at Sarasota Booker. 

Trent Wilson | offensive line | Southlake Tx.

Three-star 6-foot-4 270-pound offensive lineman Trent Wilson committed to JMU on June 23. Wilson played predominantly left guard for Southlake Carroll High School in 2023 who reached the UIL 6A D2 Texas state football championship. Wilson’s most notable other offers were from SMU, Navy, Tulsa and Air Force. He’s the 101st ranked interior offensive lineman in the nation and 215th player in Texas, according to 247sports.

JD Rayner | offensive line/tight end | West Roxbury, Ma.

At 6-foot-5 and 270 pounds, Rayner received offers from UMass, Fordham, Cornell, Bryant, Holy Cross and Lehigh, but announced to the Dukes on June 23 through his X account. His profile on hudl.com lists him as a tight end and defensive end, but Rayner’s bio on X lists him as an offensive tackle.

Weston Sturzinger | defensive back/wide receiver | Sandusky, Ohio  

The 6-foot-2 180-pound Sturzinger is the 115th ranked player in Ohio, according to 247 sports. He chose JMU over Kent State, Bowling Green, Navy and Toledo. He is a two-time unanimous all conference defensive back and two-time all-district defensive back. He twice made the All Ohio high school team at defensive back, but also played wide receiver. His junior year he recorded 53 tackles, three interceptions, 924 receiving yards and ten touchdowns at Perkins High School. He verbally commited on June 19.

William “Trey” Dudley | running back/ linebacker | Ashburn, Va.

Rival's three-star running back from Briar Woods High School verbally committed to JMU on June 19. As a junior, Dudley was named first-team all-county after rushing for 877 yards and seven touchdowns. He held offers from most notably ECU and W.Va. and Sun Belt conference foes Marshall and ODU. 

Kai Callen | defensive back/athlete | Carrollton, Ga.

Callen was an Idaho 5A All-State first-team selection as a defensive back in 2023. He recorded two interceptions and 46 tackles and was a state qualifier in both the 100 and 200-meter dashes as a sophomore, according to 247 sports. His only other FBS offers are from UConn and Washington State. He’ll play his senior year at Carrollton High School in Carrollton, Ga. He verbally committed on June 19.

Cole Webster | defensive tackle | Waxhaw, N.C. 

Cuthbertson High School defensive tackle Cole Webster finished his junior season with 73 tackles, 14 tackles for loss and six sacks — placing 13th and sixth respectively amongst all defenders in the 4A Southern Carolina Conference. He made his decision via his X account on June 19. Webster received 16 college offers before committing to JMU, but his only other FBS offer came from ODU. The 6-foot-3, 280-pound Webster was a defensive captain in 2023.

Jerald James | edge | Miami, Fl.

The 6-foot-2, 210-pound pass rusher from Miami Palmetto High School received offers from Liberty, West Virginia, Maryland and SMU among others, but chose the Dukes on June 18. During his junior season, James racked up 60 tackles, 21 tackles for loss, seven sacks and four forced fumbles.
