JMU’s Student Government Association (SGA) approved resolutions encouraging JMU to implement Narcan training and resident hall NaloxBoxes as well as contingency funds for the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), Madison Saxophone Society (MSS), Camp Kesem and the Bee Friendly Beekeeping Club during its meeting March 5. 

The Foundation of Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE) expressed disappointment in JMU and the Student Government Association’s (SGA) “lack of transparency” around SGA’s illegal closed meeting in a statement to The Breeze on Friday morning, marking the third time FIRE has raised concerns about the SGA’s governance in the past year.

At its Tuesday meeting, the SGA approved purchases of event supplies from its reserve funds. Madison Equality's request to access its own reserve funding was approved to put toward the purchase of a button maker for events. Madison Saxophone Society was approved for contingency funding for an upcoming event open to JMU students.

It was during the Student Government Association (SGA)’s Sept. 19 Senate when senior Sen. Parker Boggs first took notice of what he considered a “major First Amendment violation” after the organization amended minor grammatical errors within its election policy. Since he raised his concerns, the SGA has made plans to revisit the amendment at a later time.

The Student Government Association (SGA) Senate gave out the annual Madison Vision Teaching Awards (MVTAs) and passed a resolution to release an immediate statement regarding JMU’s chapter of Young Americans for Freedom’s (YAF) lecture with Liz Wheeler, which took place Wednesday evening.

The Student Government Association issued a statement Tuesday, saying it felt misled by JMU's chapter of the Young Americans for Freedom (YAF) in its request for funds to host Liz Wheeler's upcoming lecture on the topic "The Ideology of Transgenderism." YAF's original presentation to request contingency funds from SGA did not include the selected subject matter of Wheeler's upcoming talk as a potential topic.

The JMU community has been sharing its views on free and hate speech and who should be allowed on campus ahead of a lecture from Liz Wheeler, a conservative political commentator, titled “The Ideology of Transgenderism" to be held next Wednesday. Protests are already in the works and the event has moved to a different room than initially scheduled, but other than what, Wheeler's lecture is scheduled as is despite sharp backlash. 

The Student Government Association (SGA) Senate approved funding for the Asian Student Union (ASU) and JMU acapella groups Low Key and Unaccompanied, as well as the budget for University Program Board (UPB), and heard a presentation from JMU Dining Services during Tuesday’s meeting.  

The Student Government Association (SGA) Senate unanimously passed a motion to provide both MadiTHON and Kinetix with a $5,000 program grant and approved $3,000 of contingency funds to be given to the InterVarsity Christian Fellowship at Tuesday's meeting.

At Tuesday night's meeting, the Student Government Association (SGA) Senate voted to update its spring 2023 elections policy and approved a $720 contingency fund for Quizbowl, a competitive academic club available to all members of the JMU community.

The Student Government Association (SGA) Senate held its first meeting of the 2022-23 academic year Sept. 6. The Senate voted to approve an amendment on behavioral misconduct and appointed a senator as the JMU Student Representative to the Harrisonburg City Council.
