How can volunteer work create a positive impact on the community?
As a volunteer Trustee of three charitable organisations I feel an immense sense of pride. Being a volunteer is my way of giving back to society. I have volunteered throughout my life and found it’s a great way to meet like minded people or reach across the divide to people who are from a different background on a common issue, whether that is a social action project or campaign. So the social benefit is enormous but there are also other benefits such as building relationships, fostering meaningful connections and deepening compassion and empathy.

How can volunteer work create a positive impact on the community?
Volunteer work and volunteers contribute to local communities hugely. Often carrying out tasks and duties that otherwise would have to be paid for by local government such as cleaning streets and picking up rubbish. Volunteers in the UK also contribute to the health sector providing support to patients and again taking on duties that otherwise would have to be paid for. As carers volunteers carry the burden of taking care of elderly, children and vulnerable in society, often unpaid and unrecognised. On the other hand highly skilled and experienced employees of companies with sophisticated and generous CSR policies, can provide essential services to voluntary organisations which otherwise would not be able to afford those services.

What are the different types of international organizations that work in human rights?
NGOs are critical to a healthy society and democracy. Their impartiality and independence gives them credibility which means they are often seen as trustworthy, especially when through social media there is a huge amount of disinformation and fake news. However, NGOs should not take that trust for granted and make sure they have robust governance structures in place in order to hold themselves accountable and remain transparent.
