I want every candidate in every constituency asked key questions about poverty. So colleagues at Christians Against Poverty came together to help make that happen. capuk.org/ppcmap will show you the progress we are making together capuk.org/ppc is how you can get your question asked (we made that bit easy to and pre-wrote some questions with the help of some clients & former clients of ours - questions about poverty coming from people who *really* know what its like is surely more impactful, no?) Do please join in - not just in writing to your candidates, but also in sharing the opportunity with friends and family and neighbours and networks. We have an opportunity to make a real difference here, and get poverty put firmly on the political agenda. It hasn't been treated with the priority that it deserves, and is now a matter of public urgency. Together, we can do this. It's the only way it will happen.

I just asked my MP to make tackling poverty a core priority ahead of the General Election. Could you email your MP too? Tackling poverty has to be a key issue at the next General Election. With 1 in 5 people across the UK struggling against poverty, we urgently need change for our communities. Our political leaders need to know that we want tackling and ultimately ending poverty to be one of the top priorities for the next government. MPs have a part to play in making sure their party’s plans to tackle poverty are set out ahead of the election. You can use this simple e-action to send a letter to your MP asking them to make sure the next General Election marks the beginning of the end for poverty in the UK. https://lnkd.in/epmxpAbN

In our second panel of today, we're exploring our new research with UK Collaborative Centre for Housing Evidence which projects pensioner poverty could almost double in the next 15 years. Experts will discuss the soaring rate of poverty in later life and how to tackle the issue. Today, #TwoMillionTooMany older people live below the poverty line in the UK. If we don't see urgent policy change and intervention, pensioner poverty could surge. Adequate income to escape the challenges of poverty is higher than many people think. 61% of people in poverty in Edinburgh live in a household where at least one adult is in work and yet employment alone won't ensure that they have enough money to live on. Everyone should have the right to a dignified life free from poverty and employment alone isn’t enough to ensure access to an adequate income for everyone. #ChallengePoverty

What do we see as the nature of poverty in today's Australia and what should be done about it? They were just two of the questions being discussed today at a Parliamentary Inquiry attended by Consumer Action CEO Stephanie Tonkin and financial counsellor Kirsty Robson. Stephanie told the committee that many of the callers to our helplines are experiencing poverty. "Our frontline work provides insight into how our consumer market, that includes essential services, systemically disadvantages low-income individuals and households. " We call this the ‘poverty premium’ which both drives and exacerbates poverty by trapping people in financial difficulty and charging them more for services they are struggling with or unable to afford." Kirsty described the desperate stories two callers had told her, just in the past week: "You need to understand that these people are already incredible money managers, that they are not in this situation because of a personal failing or reckless spending. It’s systemic, it’s the situation they’re in. They don’t have enough money to live on." Listen to their presentation, and or read the text of their presentation. https://lnkd.in/g_TSwGB2

The Institute for Public Policy Research found that poverty is driving more than 1.3 million cases of depression described as ‘medically avoidable’. Food poverty is linked to higher rates of stress. It can cause feelings of isolation, stigmatisation, and shame. We know that the impact of food poverty and insecurity is more far-reaching than the physical effects of being hungry. The anxiety surrounding where your family’s next meal will come from can be debilitating. Learn more: https://bit.ly/45LQ1U9
