This programme is ‘psycho-social’ in its orientation (rather than ‘(anti-)psychiatric or pseudo-psychological) and has much to to tell us about our ‘mad world’ - rather than the iatrogenic so-called mental health system which ‘sadly, madly and badly’ locates ‘madness’ in the bodies of those of us who find ourselves manifesting and expressing the profound psycho-social and social-political disturbance in which we are all mired … This is exactly the sort of programme that our current odious government (and its hench-persons) is likely to attack and destroy - perhaps because they don’t want us to think about the ways in which they themselves are unquestionably very ‘mad’ …! ‘Delusions of normalcy’ though massively destructive to all is not yet ‘a diagnosis’ yet we see the damage everywhere - and much too-often in the attitudes of those of us who work in so-called ‘mental health’ systems - which, of course, should more accurately be called ‘mental-illness’ services …

Last week the School celebrated its 30th anniversary at a special celebration attended by the University's Chancellor, HRH The Princess Royal. Speaking of the role the School has played in supporting and championing humanities research, as well as looking to the future, Professor Jo Fox, Dean of the School, said: “The world has changed a great deal since the School was formed in 1994 […] And while our world may be more connected than ever before, it is also a more divided, more fraught, and in many ways, a more precarious one.    “A critical, creative, and human approach is not only valuable in addressing [these] global challenges – it is indispensable. The humanities offer not only diagnoses, but increasingly we offer solutions. We see this every day in the research we support across the UK. “We will continue to champion and provide a home for groundbreaking research, strengthen our local and international partnerships, widen participation across our disciplines, and further the cause of humanities to understand ourselves and each other.     “In doing so we will equip future generations with the skills to answer the most pressing issues of today and tomorrow.” https://lnkd.in/dEB2GTqv

As our community of Ramsay Postgraduate and Undergraduate Scholars grows, we have more and more opportunities for interaction. At our 2023 Ramsay Postgraduate Orientation, 2021 Ramsay Postgraduate Scholar James Rigby addressed the new cohort, describing his experience of postgraduate study at Oxford, the joys and challenges of scholarly life and how 'little acts of scholarship' can add to the modern world. Discussing the deepening and sharing and understanding of our civilization, James said that it's crucial that 'the fundamental ideas that have cultivated our society, basic moral rights, the scientific method, the rule of law, are not scraped clean from the public's minds and written over by merely passing concerns.'
