Last week we hosted a four day programme in Newcastle for students of Jesmond Park Academy as part of a pilot for a new work experience format 📝 In partnership with Newcastle United Foundation and PlanBEE sponsors, the programme aims to give young people an insight into the industry, experience a range of disciplines and raise awareness of the opportunities for young people to establish a career in the built environment through pathways such as PlanBEE (Built Environment Education). Students joined workshops with Ryder interiors, our landscapes and architectural teams, as well as Black & White Engineering, and consultants Cundall to provide the students with a more holistic understanding of the built environment. This all fed into their project brief for the week to design a House of the Future in teams. Why we need Pride... On Saturday, we hosted a Northern Pride Breakfast event at Ryder Architecture with Architecture LGBT+ and Building Equality, which saw over 20 North East organisations attend for a morning of fun and networking. Thank you to everyone who came along, it was great to catch up with friends and meet new faces too. The event was a success and it was particularly great to see people bringing their families along, kids and dogs included! After the event we joined the Pride March, which is both a protest and celebration of LGBTQ+ rights. With this year’s theme being ‘unapologetically visible’ it really felt like a step up from previous events with venues open across the city to promote solidarity and allyship. My husband and I then continued with our day, celebrating with friends and family. Later in the evening I found out that the best friend of my niece, 15, was subject to homophobic abuse. Having attended his first ever Pride event - being part of the fantastic community, he ended his night picking up a McDonalds and being fronted with a group of young adults who threw a drink over him and verbally abused him with homophobic slurs. A devastating update to end the day and a big dose of reality of where we stand in 2024 in the UK. We need allies, we need support and protection. We need to continue to push for equality.

We had an incredible week hosting the winner of the 2023 global net zero neonatal unit challenge, Sabina Lacey, student from Prince of Wales Island International School, Penang, Malaysia. Launched by Class Of Your Own (COYO), as part of her prize, Sabina has been hosted by UK based organisations to help develop her design and receive valuable experience. After working with Sir Robert McAlpine and Murphy Philipps LLP on design drawings and net zero requirements, Sabina joined Ryder working on New Hospital Programme projects. Working alongside her mentor Rafaela Ahsan, designer at Ryder, Sabina received guidance from healthcare experts referencing live projects, attended in person client meetings and CPD sessions, and reviewed her existing design against the Health Building Notes. She was able to use this new knowledge to develop her existing design and present her new plans and 3D model to the team. To celebrate, we invited those who supported and contributed to Sabina’s work experience here in the UK, and all attendees were blown away by the quality of her work. Dr Isabel Williams, senior learning and development lead at Ryder, who has been coordinating the visit with COYO, commented: “Sabina is a lovely individual, very talented and strategic in how she approaches her work. She has shown a professional attitude and exemplary skills throughout the work placement, and we have thoroughly enjoyed hosting her this week. We wish her all the best as she continues down her educational pathway!” PRINCE OF WALES ISLAND INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL #Everythingarchitecture #workexperience #design

Breaking ground at the New College Durham MUGA Pitch ✅ The MUGA (Multi Use Games Area) pitch will be located to the south of the site on the existing car park, with the new car park located to the east incorporates a SUDS system, including permeable surfaces and an attenuation grass basin, to manage rainwater runoff on site. The scheme includes extensive landscape and biodiversity enhancement with new hedgerows and 124 new trees planted. Steve Blacklock, landscape director at Ryder, said: “We’re delighted to see the construction of the all weather pitch begin. The project will be a fantastic asset for New College Durham and the local community, and the extensive landscape works will enrich the campus and local biodiversity.” Thanks to the project team New College Durham, Cleveland Land Services, Dome PM, Jasper Kerr Consulting, TGA and DPP for their support and collaboration. #Everythingarchitecture #newcollegedurham #breakingground #landscape

We're in the midst of hosting a four day work experience programme in partnership with Newcastle United Foundation and PlanBEE (Built Environment Education) sponsors. We've welcomed 20 students from Jesmond Park Academy to Ryder at Cooper's Studios in Newcastle. The purpose of the programme is to gain an insight into architecture, experience a range of disciplines and raise awareness of opportunities for young people to get in the industry, through pathways including PlanBEE (Built Environment Education). In addition to our landscapes, interiors, and architectural teams, Black & White Engineering and Cundall are joining us to showcase their disciplines, to provide students with a more holistic understanding of the built environment. The students' ideas and designs are developing wonderfully, and we look forward to seeing their learnings come to fruition. 📝 #Everythingarchitecture #NUF #PlanBEE #JesmondParkAcademy #workexperience

The Ryder Architecture team in Glasgow are gearing up to take part in a charity hike up Ben Nevis on the 17 August in support of JDRF UK – a charity dedicated to improving lives and curing Type 1 Diabetes. This cause sits close to the hearts of many of our team, with a quarter of us having a direct relation to the condition through diagnosed children or their significant other halves living with Type 1 Diabetes from a young age. "The rotational nature of the apprenticeships is unique. By the end of the two-year programme, the apprentices will have gained a huge amount of practical experience. As a result, they will be incredibly valuable assets to those employers." Peter Barker, partner at Ryder Architecture, explains how the PlanBEE (Built Environment Education) programme is disrupting the traditional approach to apprenticeships #apprenticeships #education #training #builtenvironment #construction
