What makes a good city? We believe that cities are good for us, at least they can and they should be. Cities have the potential to foster community, creativity, innovation, and economic activity. However too often, around the world, cities fail to live up to this potential. While they may vary in size, function, culture and geography, all cities are seeking to overcome the same key issues. The Good City aims to address some of the most pressing urban challenges facing today’s cities such as energy use, low carbon transport and buildings, and optimising technology and data. Through harnessing our collective expertise, we have set out a vision on how to create better cities for all. Explore The Good City: https://loom.ly/8DW0C1M #TheGoodCity #Design #Urbanism

McMaster University in Ontario has a reputation for excellence in teaching, learning and research. BDP has a global reputation for designing the best higher education spaces. Together, BDP and McMaster have created a campus plan that brings forward places and spaces that foster ambition, and inspire transformation. By naturalising large part of the campus, we will create a revitalised hub for education that provides a vibrant and welcoming environment for students, faculty and staff. Our global experience tells us that this kind of plan is the first part of developing a real sense of community for the 47,000 people who use the campus everyday. How can Labour deliver it's promise of building new homes? BDP believes that cities are good for us or at least that they should be. David Rudlin, Director of Urban Design at BDP spoke to The Guardian to discuss what he believes is the best way new housing can be created without burdening communities. https://loom.ly/B4qAD_s Too many cities are congested, polluted and car dependant to be efficient. This was at the forefront of David’s mind and to create a degree of separation, he recommends creating borders through the use of woodlands and parks, using them as buffers. David stresses that 3,000 homes should be the minimum built to create a new town as that would be sufficient to support a secondary school while also still having its own dedicated retail, medical and educational facilities. By incorporating good transport links and ensuring adequate servicing by public transport, It would create a small but lively walkable town that is self-sufficient, alleviating the burden on nearby conurbations. This is exactly why we launched The Good City. An initiative to bring together experts from around the world to discuss and explain what makes cities and towns successful. James Stirling was one of Britain's foremost post-war architects, known for designing some of the world's most interesting, nonconformist and ground breaking buildings. Now, a new conservation-led approach is bringing life back to one of his most iconic designs while respecting the architectural legacy. We are working closely with The University of Cambridge to restore the History Faculty Building on the Sidgwick site; one of Stirling's famous ‘red trilogy’ buildings. Jessica Mailey, Architect Director at BDP, explained “We recognise that the Stirling Building is a landmark in the history and development of architecture and needs to be treated as such.” “Our approach is faithful to the building diagram with the emblematic nature of the architecture as the focal point of the restored building. The work will include some adaptation to the more communal areas of the building to create flexible and inspiring spaces, responsive to the University’s ever-changing requirements, while respecting and responding to Stirling’s stylistic language.” This project will respect the existing architecture and restore the distinctive character of the building while implementing sustainable and inclusive modern adaptations to make the building more accessible and environmentally-conscious.
