PAPYRUS is the leading UK charity dedicated to the prevention of young suicide.

About us

PAPYRUS Prevention of Young Suicide is the UK charity dedicated to the prevention of suicide and the promotion of positive mental health and emotional wellbeing in young people. Suicide is the biggest killer of people aged 35 and under in the UK. We believe that suicide is preventable. PAPYRUS exists to reduce the number of young people who take their own lives, by shattering the stigma surrounding suicide and equipping young people and their communities with the skills to recognise and respond to emotional distress. We believe that no young person should have to struggle alone with thoughts of suicide. Our suicide prevention helpline, HOPELINE247 is staffed by trained suicide prevention advisers, who work with young people – and anybody concerned for a young person – to help keep them safe from suicide. HOPELINE247 is a free and confidential call, text and email service, which is available 24 hours a day, every day of the year (weekends and bank holidays included). We deliver our suicide prevention education and training packages to thousands of people each year, to create suicide-safer communities across the UK. PAPYRUS envisions a society which speaks openly about suicide and has the resources to help young people who have suicidal thoughts. No young person should have to suffer alone with thoughts or feelings of hopelessness, and nobody should have to go through the heartbreak of losing a young person to suicide. Everyone can play a role in preventing young suicide.

  • We are offering fully-funded suicide prevention training to people living in the West Midlands, sign up via the link below! PAPYRUS has been awarded a grant of almost £50,000 to help reduce the number of people who take their own lives in the West Midlands. Cara Donald, PAPYRUS’s Area Manager for England Central, said: “We would like to say a big thank you to the Heart of England Community Foundation which administers the Inclusive Communities Fund. The generous grant of £48,769 will be well spent enabling people to invest in new skills, helping them to support those who are struggling with life and play an important role in keeping our local communities suicide-safe.” Read our press release in full: https://lnkd.in/g8BirE4u #SuicidePrevention #WestMidlands #Community #WeArePAPYRUS

  • 💭 WHAT TO DO IN AN EMERGENCY? In challenging moments, it's crucial to know how to respond when a young person is at immediate risk of acting on thoughts of suicide or in scenarios where a young person has already taken steps to end their life. Here's a guide on what to do in such a critical situation: 1️⃣ Seek emergency help: If working towards safety with a young person is not possible because they are on the verge of immediate self-harm or have already taken steps, don't hesitate to seek emergency help. 2️⃣ Accompany them to A&E or call for an ambulance: If you're with the young person and it's safe to do so, accompany them to the local A&E department. If this isn't feasible, call an ambulance. This is the right course of action – it's not a waste of emergency services' time, which some people often worry about. Just as in a medical emergency like a heart attack, timely intervention can be a matter of life or death. Understand that calling for emergency services is not a misuse of resources. If someone is at risk of ending their life, treating it as seriously as any other life-threatening situation is paramount. The goal is to provide the necessary assistance and support. 3️⃣ Involving the police: If there's concern that the young person cannot stay safe, has taken steps towards taking their life, but is struggling to engage in help for themselves, don't hesitate to call the police at 999 - this also goes for someone who is missing. This is not about getting someone into trouble; instead, it's about utilising the resources available to swiftly locate and aid those vulnerable to suicide. The police can collaborate with other emergency services for a comprehensive response. Remember, acting promptly in these situations can make a significant difference. It's important to prioritise the safety and wellbeing of our young people, recognising that seeking help is a responsible and compassionate response. If you are concerned for someone who might be expereincing suicidal thoughts, then please reach out to HOPELINE247 for free confidential support on 0800 068 4141.💜 #LearnonLinkedIn #SuicidePrevention

  • PAPYRUS WEEKLY ROUNDUP It’s been another very busy week for PAPYRUS, and we’ve had all hands on deck across the UK raising awareness, spreading hope, and opening up support: Great Yorkshire Show: Our England North Team have been at the 165th Great Yorkshire Show in Harrogate, North Yorkshire, hosted by the Yorkshire Young Farmers Clubs for the 2nd year. Collectively we spoke with hundreds of people, and we welcomed Nicola (one of our newest volunteers from Bradford) on her first event. She absolutely smashed it! We also had a lot of messages written on our ‘hope sheep’ (TM), alongside some crafty people making hope rocks. A wonderful time was had by all, rain or shine… And we certainly got plenty of rain! Charford First School Community Fayre: Our England Central Team were out doing what they do best, providing awareness raising and support to the families and staff of Charford First School. We’ve also shared details about our PAPYRUS Schools Guide. To learn more about our Schools Guide and to download a copy, please visit: https://lnkd.in/eVmY8c3q Ignite Your Life, Mersey Care NHS Foundation Trust: We were thrilled to attend Ignite Your Life, a celebration of service user and carer involvement in Mersey Care. We were joined by our fantastic volunteer Linda, who showcased her incredible art and craft skills. Thanks so much for your wonderful support, Linda. Bath Volunteer Meetup: It was lovely to catch up with our amazing volunteers in Bath, and to hear about what they want to achieve as volunteers in their local area. They are keen to raise awareness to local schools, colleges and universities, and are even thinking about planning a HOPEWALK! We also got to meet Bertie, the 15-week-old Cocker Spaniel, who got plenty of fuss from everyone present. Morning well spent! Hwl yr Haf - Summer Fun: We joined Ysgol Glan Clwyd, a local Welsh language high school, for their summer fair. We took along our sparkly new bi-lingual spin the wheel game for good measure. We had a lot of interest at the stall, and quite a few students had not heard about us – but they have now! Messages of hope were written by students, parents and staff. We gifted this beautiful collection of messages to the Headmistress, who plans to display these on the school message board screen. Cardiff Probation Services Volunteer Fair: This is the first event we've attended to talk with people in the 18 - 25 age range about volunteering with us, and helping those who are struggling with thoughts of suicide. We also had a bit of time to network and made connections with a local coffee van business: they've kindly said they can provide hot drinks for our upcoming HOPEWALK in Cardiff! Diolch yn fawr iawn. To register for one of our upcoming HOPEWALK events, please visit: https://lnkd.in/dDnGRkQ Stay tuned for many more updates to come! 💜 #SuicidePrevention #HOPEWALK

  • When somebody is struggling with thoughts of suicide, they are often reminded to 'reach out for help'. We know how difficult it can be for somebody who is struggling to put their feelings into words, and reach out to the likes of a friend, family member, support service or counsellor. That's why it's incredibly important that we promote a shift to 'reach in to help'. Research proves that asking a young person if they are experiencing thoughts of suicide can actually reduce the risk of them ending their life. Asking and determining if that person is feeling suicidal gives you the opportunity to explore those feelings further and support them to stay safe. It's not always easy to know if someone is suicidal, however, there may be signs to look out for; some more obvious than others. • PAPYRUS Prevention of Young Suicide is delighted to collaborate with mdeducational foundation; a charity prioritising student wellbeing by providing fully funded wellbeing support in post-16 educational settings across the UK. mdeducational foundation aims for a world in which every student has access to the wellbeing support they need, without delay. Through a three-year salary-funded commitment, they place dedicated wellbeing professionals in post-16 educational settings to enable them to kickstart their long-term wellbeing strategy. By funding the placement of Wellbeing Leads, they’re normalising student psychological fitness and resilience through guidance and early intervention – supporting young people with their wellbeing needs through education and beyond. This collaboration with mdeducational foundation will open new audiences for PAPYRUS. Our awareness raising sessions, suicide prevention training and resources will equip Wellbeing Leads, and the whole school community with the skills to spot the signs when a young person is struggling with thoughts of suicide, to feel confident to intervene and to work with them to keep them safe in that moment. #PAPYRUS #SuicidePrevention #Wellbeing #MentalHealth #Charity
