Place2Be welcomes the Government's proposed new laws to reform education and improve children and young people's wellbeing across the country. Among these reforms are plans to recruit more teachers, introduce breakfast clubs in primary schools, and reduce school uniform costs. As well as ensuring these laws come into effect, Place2Be is aware that wider reforms are also needed to make schools a place where young people's mental health is at the centre. This needs the collaboration of school leaders, the third sector, health, children’s services and Ofsted – backed by the Government. We also need the urgent expansion of school-based mental health services. We want to build a system where - come September - every child can walk through their school gates feeling positive, accepted and like they belong. Only then can we break down the barriers to opportunity. Read more about the proposed laws and Place2Be's response:

The latest Government data on attendance shows that 1 in 5 children are still persistently missing school. With a new Government in place, attendance must be a key priority area for the future of our children and young people. We recently convened a roundtable with colleagues at Centre for Mental Health & Children and Young People's Mental Health Coalition (CYPMHC) to address the issue of persistent absence. In this best practice framework created by leading specialists across policy, research, and delivery, we identify impactful evidence-based solutions to drive real change. Together, we agreed we need to: 💛 Make schools inclusive by reforming school culture 🗣️ Provide support for mental health issues and SEND 👪Work with families and spot when children are at risk 🏫 Tackle the systemic drivers of persistent and severe school absence Read our full recommendations 👇

"As someone who struggled with my mental health at school, coming to terms with myself allowed me to manage my mental health more. It took a huge weight off my back when I started to accept myself, I started to enjoy my life more and my wellbeing improved because of it." 💬 In an open letter to young people, Place2Be Ambassador Josh Smith shares his advice and encouragement for anyone who feels different or is struggling to express themselves. #MentalHealth #PrideMonth
