Making public transport great for our environment, economy and communities

About us

At Nexus we're working to make public transport great for our environment, economy and communities. There are few people living in Tyne and Wear whose daily lives are not touched in some way by Nexus. Whether it's getting to work, education, family days out, nights out or sporting activities, our Metro, bus and ferry network provides sustainable, reliable and affordable travel. The public transport we plan, provide and promote improves the economic prosperity of North East England and the daily lives of its people. We're also looking to the future, creating the travel networks people will want to use in decades to come. Nexus is the Tyne and Wear Passenger Transport Executive and administers funds on behalf of the Tyne and Wear Integrated Transport Authority.

⏪ Back in week 13, our team were out in force delivering another plain line renewal on the Tyne and Wear Metro, this time at Fawdon Station. 🛤️ With a range of machines, attachments and trailers in use, the team worked from Friday night to Monday morning to complete the renewal through Fawdon level crossing and the station platform.

We’re delighted to be working with our colleagues at Lumo to support Pride in South Tyneside. We’re event partners for the Pride Pooches in Jarrow on Sunday, 14 July, and we can’t wait to see everyone travelling their by Metro. It promises to be a fantastic day, with fun for all the family, and a chance to see all our four-legged friends heading there with their owners. With limited car parking at the site the Metro is the ideal way to get there, and don’t forget that kids also go free. Inclusivity is the cornerstone of our brand, right across the communities that Metro serves. We want everyone to feel welcome, safe, and free from discrimination whenever they choose to travel with us, and this exciting event is a perfect opportunity to remind our customers that their dogs can travel with them on Metro for free. Paws for Pride: The publicity photo shows showing Andrea Font-Sanclimens, from Lumo, and Metro Customer Service Advisor Chris Jobson promoting the train operators’ support for Pride Pooches with a bit of help from Walter the dog - who was very well behaved!

We've launched a limited-edition Metro Pop card featuring icons from the LGBTQIA+ community to celebrate Pride 2024 and champion inclusive travel for everyone. The dazzling design appears on the familiar Pop smartcard for this year’s Northern Pride Festival. They will be available at the event in Newcastle, 19-21 July, at the Market Village next to Grey’s Monument. It was the work of local multi-disciplinary creative designer and visual communicator Em T Sharp, whose design features LGBTAIQ+ icons, including Freddie Mercury, David Bowie, Marsha P Johnson, Claude Cahun and Audre Lorde. We are the official transport and accessibility partner of Northern Pride, and Rainbow Sponsor of Sunderland Pride and has brought out the LGBTQIA+ themed Pop card to support this. A busy day at the Shields Ferry as the crew had to deal with a lobster pot that was snagged in the propellers. Thanks to the diving experts at Sealane Inshore for their assistance today. Their divers inspected the issue and removed the obstruction from the propulsion unit. The Voith propeller provides propulsion to the Ferry and a safety critical system to allowing the vessel to safely operate. During an early morning crossing, the Voith unit became entangled with a discarded fishing pot which was required to be moved prior to the vessel passing its pre-sailing safety checks.

Our lost property sale at Tynemouth Station market raised almost £1000 for our charity Bryons Animal Shelter yesterday. A fantastic amount! Thank you to everyone who came along to buy some of the weird and wonderful items we had for sale, and thanks to the members of our Communications Team who gave up their Sunday to work on the stall.

Very exciting announcement! As part of Tyne & Wear Metro and Nexus’s collaboration with Northern Pride, I’ve been working with Ste Dunn and multidisciplinary creative designer and visual communicator, Em T Sharp, to create this limited edition Pop Pay As You Go card, celebrating Pride 2024 and championing inclusive travel for everyone. It’s not just vibrant and fun to look at, it’s cheaper than using paper tickets! You can find out who all of the faces belong to, and some information about how they became queer icons at northern-pride.com/popcard
