The Phonics Screening Check is done and the results are in. A sigh of relief, relax your shoulders and congratulate yourself on all that hard work helping your learners prepare for the PSC. This time last week was Co-op Academies Trust annual Secondary Science Leaders Conference. What an event! A pleasure to organise and lead. We hosted 13 heads of department and SLEs from across our secondary schools, together with trusted partners from AQA, Pearson, STEM Learning UK, The Ogden Trust, Royal Society of Chemistry, Carousel Learning, Hodder Education, Oxford University Press, and sAInaptic - all in the fantastic Co-op buildings in central Manchester (with the added perk of my favourite pub across the road for after). Working with the theme of “How can we make each other better?”, we looked at the common challenges we faced and shared solutions. We explored one in particular - our burgeoning “Framework for Good Science Teaching”, and how we can all benefit from and contribute to the expertise and training we’re developing through it. We then looked at taking our first steps towards a shared curriculum, by starting with disciplinary knowledge and some common practicals, the brainchild of my colleague Peter Hurst. Over an informal lunch we started collaborating with our external partners in a ‘marketplace’ style event. We even had a couple of fellow Co-op colleagues pop by to see what we we’re all about! Before returning for some collaborative action planning in the afternoon. The whole experience was just a reminder of how we have some of the best leaders around and how lucky I am to just be a small part of unlocking their potential.

🌟 Pupil Wellbeing – One Year On 🌟 It’s been a year since the release of my book, and I’ve had the privilege of sharing its message through numerous speaking events, education festivals, CPD deliveries, and speeches. Now feels like the right time to clarify what pupil wellbeing is NOT 🛑 1️⃣Pupil wellbeing is not an additional task, burden, or stick to beat busy teachers with! 2️⃣It is not a time-consuming and costly buy-in to the latest mindfulness practices. 3️⃣Nor should it ever be the sole responsibility of one individual in a school. 4️⃣Its not hugging-it-out in place of learning and teaching. ⭐️Pupil wellbeing should be the connections, routines, and norms of school life that create a sense of belonging, calm, and support for all pupils to access an excellent education. ⭐️⭐️Utilising existing school systems and, teaching pupils to engage with them responsibly is the essence of pupil wellbeing. ⭐️⭐️⭐️It’s not shiny or expensive; it’s routine, thoughtful, and a long-term approach that is sustainable for all. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️A huge thank you to everyone who has taken time out of their busy lives to leave a review, read my work or attend my speaking engagements.
