About us

The European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) is an independent intergovernmental organisation supported by 35 states. ECMWF is both a research institute and a 24/7 operational service, producing and disseminating numerical weather predictions to its Member States. This data is fully available to the national meteorological services in the Member States. The Centre also offers a catalogue of forecast data that can be purchased by businesses worldwide and other commercial customers. The supercomputer facility (and associated data archive) at ECMWF is one of the largest of its type in Europe and Member States can use 25% of its capacity for their own purposes. The organisation was established in 1975 and now employs around 300 staff from more than 30 countries. ECMWF is one of the six members of the Co-ordinated Organisations, which also include the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO), the Council of Europe (CoE), the European Space Agency (ESA), the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), and the European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT).

Wildfires increased across North and South America during July, with some regions experiencing record numbers of fires and emissions for the month. In North America, British Columbia, Alberta, and Saskatchewan are notably affected, with Alberta seeing its highest July emissions on record, according to the #CopernicusAtmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) GFAS data. In South America, Bolivia has been experiencing the highest total estimated fire emissions relative to the previous 21 years of the GFAS dataset. Similarly in the Brazilian Amazon, the states of Amazonas and Rondonia have experienced their highest July totals. CAMS continues to provide critical data on these fires and their emissions, helping us understand and mitigate their impacts on the environment and health. ‼️ We are excited to announce that the 𝗜𝗙𝗦 𝗺𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗹 𝗖𝘆𝗰𝗹𝗲 𝟰𝟵𝗿𝟭 has entered the Release Candidate Phase‼️ 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻? This is the final stage of the testing framework for the next version (IFS Cycle 49r1) of our weather forecast model. Forecast production using the new model is running in parallel with the operational production, and the test data is available for dissemination to those in Meteorological services of our Member and Co-operating states and our licensed users in near real-time. IFS Cycle 49r1 brings substantial changes to data assimilation methodology, the use of observations, and the underlying IFS forecast model. There are also technical changes and new parameters available, the full list of changes can be found here: https://lnkd.in/dqtGrURC 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗱𝗼? Users of ECMWF forecast products are invited to test their processing chains as early as possible with the test data provided! Step 1️⃣ Access 🔹Users with access to the MARS archive can access the data with experiment version (expver) 0079 (MARS keywords EXPVER=0079, CLASS=OD) 🔹Users with access to ECPDS and the Products Requirements Editor (PREd) can login to the test system at https://lnkd.in/duEy86aN and https://lnkd.in/daQ2DUYG and trigger the transmission of test products in the usual manner. Please note that PREd will be ready for testing at the beginning of next week. 🔹Licensed users may require intervention from the User Services Section and should raise requests via the ECMWF Support Portal. Step 2️⃣ Testing 🔹Test your workflows using the new data! 🔹Note that products provided during the release candidate phase are for internal evaluation purposes only. The products should not be redistributed, used in operations (including commercially) or published on social media platforms Step 3️⃣ Feedback Send us feedback and report any problems you find with this data via the ECMWF Support Portal: https://support.ecmwf.int/ 𝗡𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗼? 🔹All the details of the new model and how to use the test data: https://lnkd.in/dqtGrURC. 🔹ECMWF Support Portal for feedback: https://support.ecmwf.int/ 🔹Stay tuned for more information to come!

  • 🌍🌐 At ECMWF, #MachineLearning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI) are transforming weather and climate forecasting. Meet our ML-scientist Mariana Clare – in the midst of ever-growing interest in ML and #AI, the early-career scientist shares insights into her work and broader initiatives driving these advancements. Mariana’s work includes collaborating with the growing ML team at ECMWF to improve the newly created AIFS, an ML-based system to forecast the weather. Her role increasingly extends beyond research, as she is also sharing ECMWF’s and Destination Earth’s (DestinE) advancements in AI and ML at various events across Europe. Her participation in high-profile events, such as the #DestinE launch in Finland and the Supercomputing Day in Luxembourg, underscores the importance of cooperation in this field. She says: “The ECMWF data-driven model AIFS is truly a novel approach, which offers a strong potential benefit to society.” Read more about Mariana Clare’s work and the exciting future of ML in weather and climate prediction, and what it means for DestinE: ➡️ https://lnkd.in/dhUZ-VvN

  • 🌍🌐 As the Earth-system models underpinning Destination Earth’s Digital Twins run at increasingly high spatial resolutions, reaching km-scales, they capture more explicitly small-scale processes. Accurately representing these details is a crucial focus for #DestinE scientists, to help improve climate projections and understand extreme events. 📽️ In our latest video, ECMWF's Birgit Sützl provides an in-depth introduction to the representation of small-scale processes in Earth-system models and explains the extensive efforts involved in refining these models. ➡️ https://lnkd.in/dBQmHsZy 📹 For more DestinE videos, visit our multimedia page ➡️ https://lnkd.in/eg3iQhaH
