NE rainfall pattern uneven, deficit highest in Manipur
Guwahati: The monsoon in the northeast has been erratic, with only Meghalaya experiencing widespread rainfall, according to IMD data from June 1.
While parts of Assam and Tripura received surplus rain, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh are in the deficit category. In Assam, abundant rainfall has been limited to the western districts and parts of the southern and eastern/upper regions.

Meghalaya recorded the highest deviation from normal at 66%, receiving 710.4 mm of rainfall compared to the normal 426.7 mm between June 1 and 19.
Assam and Tripura had excess departures of 28% and 26%, respectively. Assam received 323.4 mm against the normal 253.1 mm, while Tripura received 353.4 mm against the normal 279.5 mm.
Among the states with deficient rainfall, Manipur had the highest deficit at 75%, followed by Mizoram and Nagaland at 37% each. Arunachal Pradesh had a 27% deficit compared to normal.
In Assam, where the flood impact has been the most severe, 11 districts received excess rainfall. However, seven of these districts are in the western/lower Assam zone, where the heaviest rainfall has been recorded recently. “This makes the heavy to extremely heavy rainfall activities mainly area-specific,” Met officials said. The remaining four districts are scattered across different zones.

In Arunachal, only Upper Subansiri district recorded excess rainfall at 163% above normal. In the Nagaland-Manipur-Mizoram-Tripura Met subdivision, only six districts recorded excess rainfall, with five in Tripura and one in Nagaland. No districts in Mizoram and Manipur received excess rainfall this season.
