JD Gaming (stands for Jingdong Gaming) is a Chinese esports organisation based in Beijing. The team was created on May 20th 2017 after JD.com acquired the LPL spot of the QG Reapers.

History[edit]

Entering League of Legends and the LPL (2017)[edit]

JD Gaming made their way into the LPL after acquiring the slot and rosters from QG Reapers. Following their acquisition JD made minor adjustments to the roster as they added Xu "Xiaoali" and Zuo "LvMao" Minghao to the team, and removing Wang "Alone" Zijun. [1] Making their debut at the 2017 Demacia Cup, they managed to beat LDL team Legend Dragon, but would face their first loss immediatly after facing LGD Gaming. The team wouldn't find much succes after in the Summer Split, finishing worse than their predecessors QG Reapers, as the organization failed to make it out of their respective group in the regular season, missing out on playoffs. The team redeemed themselves just a little at the end of the year, as they managed to have a strong run at NEST. Finishing in second, and beating the likes of Newbee, EDward Gaming and LGD Gaming. Following the tournament however, JD looked to rebuild ahead of the new year. Bringing in Top and midlaner Zhang "Zoom" Xingran and Zeng "Yagao" Qi to replace Kan "Kabe" Ho-man Kim "Doinb" Tae-sang.

An improvement year (2018)[edit]

The revamped roster made their start by having an improved 4th place finish at the Demacia Cup. Carrying on their momentum, the team this time managed to make it out of their group after the regular season at the Spring Split. They however failed to make a further impact, as they immediatly got knocked out by Bilibili Gaming in the playoffs. Nonetheless the organization did not make any changes to the line-up for the following split. Instead they brought in Yoon "Homme" Sung-young as their new head coach. A change that seemed to kick the team to a new level. This time JD finished 3rd in their respective group during the Summer Split's regular season. Furhtermore they beat out both FunPlus Phoenix and EDward Gaming in their playoffs run, before being halted by Invictus Gaming after a hard-fought best of five. Missing out on the finals, JD however still beat Rogue Warriors in a convinging 3-0 sweep to secure a third place finish. Securing themselves enough points to make it to Regional Finals. Their run for Worlds however came to an end, as they lost in the first round against EDward Gaming.

Ending the year, the organization looked to rework their roster. Losing Kim "Clid" Tae-min and Lee "LokeN" Dong-wook to SK Telecom T1 and Topsports Gaming respectively. JD brought in two players for each of the roles. Bringing in the Korean Sung "Flawless" Yeon-jun and Vietnemese Đỗ "Levi" Duy Khánh as their junglers. And two Korean Botlaners in Gu Imp Seung-bin and Ju "Bvoy" Yeong-hoon. Most notabily about the former world champion in Imp had just come off a very dissapointing split with Team WE.

(2019)[edit]

The 2019 Spring Split came to a decent start. With the new format which saw all teams compete in the same group. JD managed to eventually finish in 8th place. Just enough to secure themselves a spot at the playoffs. JD made sure to go the distance in their bracket run, as they beat Team WE, Royal Never Give Up and FunPlus Phoenix to secure themselves a place in the finals. In the end however, their run was stopped by Invictus Gaming who beat them 3-0. With that loss, JD also lost out on the chance to attend that years MSI. They did end up getting a shot at some international competition as they got to attend Rift Rivals. There they didn't make too much off a splash though, as they only managed to beat the Vietnamese Dashing Buffalo's, and lost against Korean representatives Griffin and DAMWON Gaming.

The following Summer split saw some changes, as they parted ways with Levi and Bvoy, they instead brought along Seo "Kanavi" Jin-hyeok as their secondary jungler. These changes didn't affect the roster too much though as the starting line-up had not changed. But JD seemed to have lost their momentum from their Spring run, and instead JD went unto a 6-9 record in thre regular season, finishing in 10th and failing to qualify for the playoffs. JD would still have a final shot to qualify for Worlds however, as their Spring run had netted them enough points to qualify for the Regional Finals. There JD got knocked out by Invictus Gaming in the first round after a best of five that saw the series go all the way.

Following the years conclusion, JD once again adjusted their roster. This time initially parting ways with their jungler Flawless. Reserve jungler Kanavi also initially entered free agency, but the team later on announced his return as their starting jungler. Imp would mark an end to his seven-year long career as his retirement was announced by the organization. [2] To replace the void left by Imp, JD brough back a familiar face in LokeN as they acquired him from Top Esports.

A Dominant LPL run and a debut at Worlds (2020)[edit]

Coming into the 2020 Spring Split with their new jungle and botlane, JD went off to a hot start, coming in with an impressive regular season the team managed to finish in second place. Earning themselves advanced seeding for playoffs. JD's momentum from their regular season kept on, and they beat both FunPlus Phoenix and Top Esports to earn themselves their first ever LPL title. This year they however could not have a shot at MSI as the event was cancelled due to COVID-19 pandamic. [3] Instead they attended the Mid-Season Cup where the top 4 teams of the LPL and LCK faced off. Placed in Group B alongside Gen.G Esports, DRX and Invictus Gaming. JD managed to find themselves in a three-way tie with the Korean teams. After DRX had lost against Gen.G Esports, JD managed to get the follow-up victory on them to make their way out of the group. Meeting fellow LPL team FunPlus Phoenix in the Semifinals however marked their end as they lost 1-3.

Nonetheless the team continued their run in Summer, where they again finished second in the regular season. Winning against LGD Gaming in the playoffs, they found themselves in a rematch from Spring against Top Esports. But this time JD faced a loss in the series. With their second place finish, JD had secured plenty of Championship points and they earned a direct qualification into Worlds as the LPL's second seed.

At Worlds JD was placed in Group B alongside the LCK's DAMWON Gaming, LEC's Rogue and PSG Talon from the LMS. Here they found no issue to make it out of groups, finishing in second behind DAMWON. At the playoffs, JD was drawn against fellow LPL team Suning. Before this series, the two teams had never faced eachother in a best of 5. And this time Suning ended coming out on top, ending the run of JD Gaming at Worlds. With the year coming to an end, JD parted ways with their Head Coach Yoon "Homme" Sung-young to replace him with the Head Coach from Suning, Shih "Chashao" Yi-hao. Additionally JD brought in veterans Su "xiye" Hanwei and Jin "Mystic" Seong-jun to support the roster heading into 2021.

A disaster year (2021)[edit]

Starting the year with seemingly little changes, the team continued on a same track record of last year in the regular season of Spring. JD ended up securing themselves a tied 3-4th with Top Esports on a 12-4 record, and placed themselves in the playoffs. In the playoffs however, they faced FunPlus Phoenix, a team they had failed to beat during the regular season, and their second meeting ended much the same. Ending JD's run early into the playoffs. For Summer JD again made little changes, only removing xiye and bringing on Huang "Lpc" Hao as a secondary Botlaner. However, this season seemed to a disastrous run JD failed to get any important wins on the board. The team ended on a 7-9 record, finishing the season in 12th. Their lowest placement so far since their start into the LPL. Off a bad year, JD Gaming looked to rebuild their roster. Parting ways with Zoom, Mystic, LokeN and LvMao, they acquired Top Esports' Bai "369" Jiahao, Team WE's Lou "Missing" Yunfeng and finally EDward Gaming's Wang Hope" Jie. Most notably, JD also announced the return of their former Head Coach Homme who had brough them their previous successes.

A return to form and a return to Worlds (2022)[edit]

The newly built roster came back with the success in Spring that the team was looking for. Making a strong appearance in the regular season JD Gaming found themselves in third. Their run at play-offs left to be desired though, as after they beat Weibo Gaming the team faced losses against Royal Never Give Up and Victory Five respectively. Both who had placed above them in the regular season. Their losses in the playoffs didn't deter JD though. The team saw no changes for Summer and there JD sought to make their splash. With yet another strong showing during the regular season, this time they found themselves in second. With their advanced seeiding they initially had to face off LNG Esports, who they made quick work of in a 3-0 victory. Their next opponents in Top Esports however, saw JD tested. But they persevered and managed to pull off a reverse sweep against them to secure themselves a spot in the grand finals. Here again they found themselves against Top, and again the series was a hard fought best of five. But JD proved to be the better them the second time around as well. Winning their second LPL title, and securing themselves the first seed at Worlds.

At the World Championship they initially were placed in Group B, again meeting DAMWON Gaming similiar to their first Worlds appearance, and this time joined by Evil Geniuses and G2 Esports. Similiarly to last year, the LCK and LPL representative found themselves at the top half of the group, this time ending on a 1-1 scoreline against eachother. Follwing into the Knockout Stage, JD Gaming had to face the only Western team left in Rogue. Who they made swift work off in a 3-0 fashion. Their next opponents would be T1, a team who's had a dominant run so far throughout the year as well, and who proved to be too much for JD Gaming as they beat them 3-1 in the series. Marking the end of JD Gamings run at Worlds at a 3rd-4th place finish.

In the off-season JD Gaming again looked to make moved to improve upon their roster. This time parting ways with Yagao and Hope. They brought in the former midlaner of Top Esports, Zhuo "knight" Ding and also signed former World Champion Park "Ruler" Jae-hyuk. Marking the Botlaners end with Gen.G Esports where he had spent 6 years with the team.

An attempt to achieve the Golden Road (2023)[edit]

Having seemingly built a superteam, JD started off the year by showing a dominant start to the 2023 Spring Split. Topping the group stage they found themselves in first place. They then initially faced off against Bilibili Gaming for their start to their playoffs run. The series went the full distance but saw JD coming out on top. From there they had to face off against EDward Gaming — with who they shared a 13-3 record from the group stage — The series however was not as close as the regular season perhaps made it seem as JD dominated EDG 3-0 to put themselves in their 5th finals appearance in the LPL. Having atleast secured attendance to MSI, they now had to once again fight Bilibili Gaming for the title, and a direct qualification to MSI's bracket stage. JD Gaming succeeded, and won their third LPL title.

At MSI JD Gaming was initially seeded against the Golden Guardians for their run in the bracket stage. Here they made quick work of the North American team as they swept them 3-0. Next up they faced a familiar face, as Bilibili Gaming had made it through the Play-In stage, they now had to play their LPL counterpart. Again JD Gaming proved to be the superiour team as they beat them once again. For their upper bracket final JD Gaming however was finally tested as they had to face T1 who had just beaten the LCK's first seed, Gen.G Esports. The series ended up going to a game five, which saw JD Gaming take the final game to secure their spot in the grand finals. In the lower bracket however, their LPL counterpart Bilibili had made their run by beating the likes of G2 Esports, Gen.G Esports and T1 to secure themselves a rematch on the global stage. Yet, history repeated itself as JD Gaming won the series 3-1. Securing the organization their first ever international title.

JD Gaming wouldn't stop their dominance for Summer. Although they fell just behind Bilibili Gaming in the regular season, they still secured the 2nd seed for the playoffs. Here they started off their run by initially beating LNG Esports. After, they once again found themselves facing Bilibili. What might now seem like a one-sided rivalry, JD once again swept the team 3-0 to launch themselves to the grand finals. Here LNG made their return, but the result ended in a similiar 3-2 score as their previous encounter. JD Gaming had now secured their fourth LPL title, but more importantly, set themselves up for a chance to complete the Golden Road — A title given to a team that wins all the tournaments within League of Legends yearly circuit — as they set their sights unto Worlds.

At the World Championship, they started their run by beating Europe's Team BDS for their first match in the Swiss Stage. Next up they were drawn into a match against the familiar face off Bilibili. And as their record stood, JD Gaming again beat them to set them up unto a 2-0 score. For their qualification match they again had to face an LPL counterpart as they drew LNG Esports. But their regional dominance proved once more as they secured themselves a 2-1 victory to send them to the Knockout Stage. Here they were drawn against KT Rolster from the LCK, their first Korean opponent at World's who they ended up beating 3-1. Now at the semifinals they would have to face T1 who were looking to be in form. And although JD initially managed to tie up the series to a 1-1 scoreline, T1 proved themselves to be too strong and beat JD Gaming. Marking an end to JD Gaming's attempt to achieve the golden road.
