"Renewable Purchase Obligation (RPO) serves as a pivotal instrument in driving demand for Renewable Energy nationwide. Effective monitoring of RPO compliance is crucial for ensuring its efficacy across states. Hence, alignment of stakeholders is crucial in tackling the challenges associated with RPO adherence. A streamlined flow of information will be essential for robust monitoring of RPO compliance at a national level," said Amit Kumar Singh Parihar, Director, Clean Power, at a workshop on ‘Updated RPO Trajectory and RPO Compliance Process notified by MoP under EC Act 2001’ organised by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency in New Delhi. The workshop was attended by officials from Ministry of Non-Conventional & Renewable Energy (MNRE), Central Electricity Authority (CEA), State Electricity Regulatory Commissions & Joint Electricity Regulatory Commission along with other relevant stakeholders. The participants deliberated on BEE's new RPO compliance mechanism and role of various stakeholders in its effective implementation. The event generated valuable insights on prevailing challenges and way forward for the efficient implementation of the updated RPO mechanism. “Localising the battery supply chain is crucial for India's EV transition, reducing import dependency and costs, and enhancing resilience. Subnational governments play a key role by establishing manufacturing hubs, offering incentives, and developing infrastructure. However, gaps in technical expertise and long gestation periods for key battery components remain a challenge within India’s battery supply chain. Collaboration across the EV ecosystem, including state and central governments, industry, and academia, is essential as well as aligning state policies with central policies is necessary to address these challenges. Additionally, South-South cooperation, especially with India-Africa relations, is vital due to the concentration of critical minerals in emerging economies. India can leverage bilateral agreements and partnerships to secure resources and share technological expertise, strengthening its global EV battery supply chain position. Achieving localisation requires a three-pronged approach, i.e., sending the right market signals, advancing technology, and addressing supply chain criticalities.” said Rishabh Sethi, Programme Manager, Electric Mobility Initiative, Shakti, during the panel discussion on ‘Localising the Battery Supply Chain in India’ scheduled during an event on ‘Unlocking Supply Chains for Localising EV Battery Production in India’ organised by Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations (ICRIER) and Indian Institute of Sustainable Development (IISD) on June 28, 2024, at India Habitat Centre, New Delhi.

Shakti Sustainable Energy Foundation reposted this
It was indeed an insightful discussion during the India partnership meet at the “Low Carbon-Transport in Progress: Transforming Transport in Asia” at Bangkok.
GIZ India kicked-off its NDC Transport Initiative for Asia - India Component Phase II at the regional conference of “Low Carbon-Transport in Progress: Transforming Transport in Asia” on 24 June in Bangkok to discuss with its Indian Partners and Stakeholders on challenges and strategies to faster decarbonise the #freight sector and scale-up zero emission trucks (#ZETs) adoption in India. The India Partner's meeting was Chaired by Mr Sudhendu J. Sinha - Adviser, NITI Aayog (Project Implementation Partner) and the discussion was led by Mr Subhash Chandra Karol and Mr Ramesh Verma - Logistics Division, MOCI. The Partner's meeting initiated a collaborative effort to develop a roadmap for sustainable freight transport solutions in the face of growing #climate impacts. Thanks to all the working group partners and stakeholders for being a part of this critical discussion - WRI India I ICCT India I Agora Verkehrswende I REN21 I SLOCAT Partnership on Sustainable, Low Carbon Transport I Institute of Transportation Studies at the University of California, Davis I Safetipin I School of Planning and Architecture (SPA), Delhi I TERI - The Energy and Resources Institute I Shakti Sustainable Energy Foundation I Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi International Climate Initiative I Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action I Changing Transport I Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH A huge shout out to Suraj Kanojia and Radhika Sangal for successfully organizing the India Partner's meeting! “The idea of creating zones that restrict certain types of vehicles has its roots in Low Emission Zones (LEZs). However, the concept of specifically targeting freight vehicles for zero emissions is a more recent development. India has set ambitious commitments for transitioning to a low-carbon economy, including reducing total carbon emissions by 1 billion tons by 2030. An important lever to achieve India's energy transition targets is the electrification of the country's freight. Zero Emission Urban Freight Zones represent a significant step towards sustainable urban logistics. By reducing the environmental impact of freight transport, these zones contribute to cleaner air, lower greenhouse gas emissions, and a healthier urban environment,” said Palak Passi, Assistant Programme Manager, Shakti, at ‘Zero Emission Urban Freight’ workshop organised by Indian Institute of Technology, Madras at India Habitat Centre on June 28, 2024.

At an event hosted by Indian Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers (ISHRAE) and National Centre for Cold Chain Development(NCCD) on World Refrigeration Day in New Delhi, focused on ‘Energy Efficient Storage – A Roadmap to Green Cold Chain' Sachin Kumar, Director, Industry, Buildings & Cooling, Shakti, highlighted the importance of adopting a holistic approach in policymaking for the Cold Chain sector. He emphasised the need to view the sector as an integrated system from 'farm to fork' rather than isolated components like pack-house, logistics, and cold storage units.

"Shifting to zero-emission trucks is essential for reducing emissions in India's trucking industry. This transition calls for customised solutions, comprehensive regulations, and a focus on the occupational health of truck drivers", said Narayankumar Sreekumar, Associate Director, Electric Mobility Initiative, Shakti, at a flag-off event and roundtable for ‘Electrifying the Eastern Corridor’ organised by SwitchON Foundation (Environment Conservation Society) in collaboration with knowledge partners Shakti and KPMG India in Kolkata on June 26, 2024. The event was marked by a flag-off ceremony and a high-level roundtable discussion, graced by distinguished guests Shri S. Suresh Kumar (IAS), Chairman of Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) and Ms Melinda Pavek, Consul General of the U.S. Consulate General in Kolkata. The roundtable convened key stakeholders to address challenges and explore solutions for accelerating the adoption of electric medium and heavy goods vehicles (e-MHGVs) in Eastern India. The event concluded by flagging off the first-of-its-kind e-truck pilot demonstration to analyse the techno-commercial feasibility of e-MHGVs in the region. Palak Passi
