20 years of mobilising the microbiome
About us
APC Microbiome Ireland is an internationally renowned SFI Research Centre which explores the role of the microbiome (microbiological community) in health and disease. The scale and scope of microbiome research has become one of the fastest moving areas of biology, of relevance to all branches of human medicine and veterinary science, and is of growing importance to the economic welfare of society. APC has created a trans-disciplinary environment conducive to innovation with a mission to link Irish science with industry and society through excellence in research, education and outreach. APC is a partnership between University College Cork, Teagasc Food Research Centre and the Cork and Mercy University Hospitals, and is home to a team of over 300 researchers and clinicians. APC collaborates with over 25 national and international industry partners from the food, agriculture, pharmaceutical, biotechnology and diagnostic sectors. APC research focuses on mining the microbiota to identify products (probiotic strains, metabolites, phage, prebiotics, anti-microbials etc) that can promote health and help prevent disease. This is of relevance to many populations, such as infants, athletes and elderly, and very relevant to disorders such as obesity, cardiovascular health, inflammation and colon cancer. APC operates in the functional food and pharmaceutical sectors, developing food and pharma solutions targeting the gut microbiota for health promotion throughout life.

New research funded by the SFI-IRC Pathways programme will investigate the link between the microbiome and the developing brain. Changes in the microbiome have been linked to social phenotypes associated with neurodevelopmental disorders as well as anxiety disorders. Dr Jatin Nagpal, PhD's (University College Cork) 'brainbiome' research utilises the transparency of zebrafish to study the link between the microbiome and the development of stress-social circuits. The SFI-IRC Pathway programme is a collaborative initiative between SFI and the Irish Research Council to support early-career research across all disciplines and to encourage a cohesive research ecosystem in Ireland. APCs Jens Walter is featured on the new Biomes podcast. Thanks to Ruairi Robertson for the invite
🎙 As exciting as the field of the microbiome is, unfortunately it is full of myths and hyperbole. This week on Biomes, I speak with two microbiome myth busters, Prof. Jens Walter of APC Microbiome Ireland, SFI Research Centre University College Cork and Prof. Alan Walker of the The Rowett Institute University of Aberdeen. We discuss prevailing myths in the microbiome world and why it is important to combat them. You can find Biomes on Spotify, Apple and all podcast streaming services. 🎙 Biomes on Spotify: https://lnkd.in/dA9KVJB As always, thanks to the great team at Microbiome Insights Inc. for sponsoring!
