PRESS RELEASE: Western diets pose greater risk of cancer and IBD, APC study finds Western diets pose a greater risk of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) and colorectal cancer, according to a milestone review of what people eat around the world. The study of six prevalent diets has examined how what we consume impacts our gut microbiome – the community of microorganisms that live in our intestines – and how the shifting balance of its composition influences our overall health. The review was conducted by APC Microbiome Ireland, SFI Research Centre, a world renowned research centre at University College Cork and Teagasc and is published in the prestigious journal Nature Reviews Microbiology. The study, led by Prof. Catherine Stanton – an APC PI and Senior Principal Research Officer at Teagasc, examined Mediterranean, high-fibre, plant-based, high-protein, ketogenic, and Western diets. PRESS RELEASE: Teagasc Johnstown Castle Environment Research Open Day A major Teagasc Open Day took place on Tuesday, 16 July, at the Teagasc Environment, Soils and Land Use Research Centre, Johnstown Castle, County Wexford. Teagasc Director, Professor Frank OMara said; “All the key benchmarks and indicators (KPIs) for sustainable farming systems, and how Irish farms can reach these were discussed today. Teagasc has identified the technologies and farming practices that are important to help farms to become more resilient in the face of a changing climate. Gabriel Trayers has been appointed as Teagasc Regional Advisory Manager in Roscommon and Longford region. The appointment was approved at the Teagasc Authority meeting today, Wednesday, 3 July.
