📊 Ireland's population could grow to just over 7 million people by 2057 under a growth scenario projected by the CSO (Central Statistics Office Ireland). 📚These findings have emerged from a study led by CSO officials and experts from outside agencies including Dr Rabia Naqvi and Dr Linda Daly, School of Mathematical Sciences, UCC. Using the 2022 census as a base, the CSO examined three different potential population growth scenarios over the period from 2023 to 2057. The number of people aged 65 years and over is also set to increase significantly over the period of these projections, with the number of people in this age category set to reach over 1 million by 2030. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/g_6e9h8C Congratulations to Dr Naqvi and Dr Daly on this research collaboration. 👏 https://lnkd.in/g_JasuFC

A UCC scientist is part of a team that has found three new species closely related to the plant from which chocolate is produced – a discovery that could pave the way for climate-proof chocolate.🍫 “Cacao prices have trebled in recent months due to low production as a result of a prolonged period of drought in West Africa, which is the area of greatest production. The discovery of new species, in addition to those already known, expands the genetic resources that are available to us that might allow us to produce drought-tolerant or disease resistant cacao trees.” Dr James Richardson, UCC. 🌱The new species, discovered in the rain forests of South America, are closely related to Theobroma cacao, the tree that bears cocoa beans which are of tremendous economic importance. The research team comprising academics from University College Cork, the USP - Universidade de São Paulo, and New York Botanical Garden say their finding is significant as it indicates that there is much work still to be done in characterising Earth's biodiversity. 🌎 The team, which includes Dr James Richardson, School of Biological Earth and Environmental Sciences, UCC and the UCC Environmental Research Institute, found three new species within the section Herrania: T. globosum, T. nervosum, and T. schultesii. #ClimateProofChocolate #CacaoResearch #Sustainability #Biodiversity #PlantScience #UCCResearch https://lnkd.in/ePpCUE_d
