I'm in a bit of a time crunch here with my personal projects, and I want to spend the least amount of time on Rails things to focus on the AI parts, so I bought @excid3's Jump Start Pro. It's well worth the price. ​ All the big things are well-designed (accounts with multiple members, API clients, 2FA, social accounts, great billing system, etc.), tons of good Stimulus controllers, and a lot of new little things I haven't used before like dev containers. Code is also well organized with good naming for everything. ​ I found it worth the price even if used just as a reference for ideas. Especially after having built or maintained these exact same features multiple times in different projects in my ~18 years of Rails. ​ It's also particularly helpful for people starting with Rails as well – since everything pretty much follows Rails standards.

This is one of the coolest articles we've published on our blog! Today on the Mindsmith blog, Coleman talks Agamben, Yeats, and Kingsnorth in drilling into how learning designers can escape the Machine and build better learning experiences as "cooked ascetics." He writes "Before anything, I think it means acknowledging that AI-generated content is the beginning, not the sum, of what you offer a learner. If we’re to reclaim genuine experience in the learning environment, a good first step may be to interrogate the way our use of AI technologies interrupts or blocks learners from having meaningful human conversations, moments of silence and reflection, and interaction with a learning environment mediated by real rather than simulated problems." Had a great conversation with Brett Stapper about the origins of Tonic.ai and some of the idiosyncrasies of building a business that crosses categories. The most important things we did: -Move quickly, but iteratively. It’s hard to learn if you’re slow or if you change north stars too often. -Focus on the customer over definitions, i.e., synthetic data vs masked data. New on the Review: Conventional wisdom teaches managers to avoid “anti-patterns,” general practices that are deemed unproductive, like micromanaging. But Will Larson, a veteran engineering leader and CTO at Carta, argues that not every anti-pattern is bad, and makes a case for the three that eng execs should explore: 🔍 1) Shying away from micromanaging. “New engineering managers are often advised to ‘step away from the code.’ But an extremely high-functioning exec understands the domain they are operating in at some level of detail,” he says. “As you get too far out of the details, you just become a bureaucrat. Too many well-meaning engineering managers end up as bureaucrats.” 📏 2) Pushing back on flawed metrics. “Often when people start measuring, there's always a concern that their measurement is flawed. And that's true for all functions,” he says. “But I’m a believer in measuring something imperfect, but useful, versus holding out for the perfect metric while measuring nothing in the interim.” ☔ 3) Serving as the umbrella for your team. “In the past, I used to think I was energizing my team by sparing them the details. But now it feels like lying to them,” he says. On a tactical level, Larson adjusted this habit by buffering less information. “That means even if it’s disappointing for folks, I’d rather them process news bit by bit, rather than deal with a huge ocean of mess all in one moment.” Link to the full article in the comments.

Last week, I sat down with Matt Bernier, a product leader at Temporal Technologies, focused on developer experience to talk about what he's learned about building trust between product & engineering and how to operate on pricing & packaging. Here's ~2 minutes on the challenges product managers have to be aware of when leading pricing & packaging initiatives. Three things AI (and Generative AI too) can do to help engineering teams to deliver higher velocity for changes. All the recent conversations around AI magically producing code means that developers and QA have even greater pressure to find problems and fix them faster. A critical question for every biotech leader: how do you make sure you hit your milestones on time, to cross the finish line before running out of money? Feature Friday: Sneak Peak at Internal Conversational Docs We already support conversational documentation for external doc sites, but now we're focusing on bringing that same powerful experience to internal use cases like onboarding new engineers to your codebase. Dev-Docs already uses AI to generate documentation on your codebase to help onboard engineers, so it only makes sense to allow users to generate curated answers from those docs as well. Additionally we have been thinking about giving teams flexibility while using this feature so that is why we are allowing teams to use their own local vector database that runs on their own machine for peace of mind. It's still early so expect this feature to look drastically different in the near future, so stay tuned!
