Start by assessing from a place of calm and clear-headedness, not stress. And be clear on what outcome you are seeking from the change. Today is... International Surfing Day! Being LIKE a surfer is a great metaphor for navigating challenges. Next time a challenge is feeling overwhelming, picture yourself surfing (or sailing). Imagine yourself going with the flow, adjusting to the ebbs and flows of what's coming at you - while still keeping an eye on where you are going. It takes practice and with time, it will become easier to handle challenges with ease and flow. #leadershipdevelopment #coaching #emergingwomenleaders

Your mindset is key in determining how you respond to challenges. In Positive Intelligence terminology, a positive (or Sage) mindset will help you consider the gift of opportunity in any challenge. And while it may not be immediately apparent, being open to the possibility can help you down the growth path. Try this: next time you face a challenge, pause (a few deep breaths help) and simply ask yourself "what could be a gift or opportunity in this situation". Here's a great article from Harvard Business Review on five types of questions that can boost strategic decision-making: 1) Investigative: What's known? 2) Speculative: What if? 3) Productive: Now what? 4) Interpretive: So, what? 5) Subjective: What's unsaid? Often, too little time is spent on exploring a particular challenge - which then leads to only stay at the surface, missing out of potentially valuable insights. The key is to balance your mix of questions and that starts by first being AWARE of the types of questions you ask. Such a simple and clear image! For many clients, strategy is often intimidating and "the CEO's job right?". Actually, strategic leadership should live throughout an organization. Yet not enough focus is given to strategic acting and influencing. I'm not surprised: that's where the heavy lifting comes in. This work requires determination to keep the course. To see if you are acting strategically, start by asking this simple question: how is my team's aligned to the organization's vision and strategy.
